Derrick Rose Injury Update: Bulls Hope Star PG Will Return This Season
Despite Derrick Rose suffering his second meniscus tear in as many years, the guard will be able to return this season. Nick Friedell of ESPN Chicago reported that Rose's surgery was "minor," and that the guard will return in four to six weeks, and should begin "aggressive rehab" on Saturday:
On Thursday, K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune received confirmation from vice president of basketball operations John Paxson regarding the team's feelings:
The comments made Friedell believe Rose will indeed return this season:
Johnson also noted that "a source close to Rose said Rose is “absolutely on board” with returning to play this season and Rose “expects to be fine.”
It's unknown when Rose, 26, injured his right knee. He received a diagnosis after experiencing pain earlier this week. The former NBA MVP tore the meniscus in the same knee last season and missed all but 10 games.
That the Bulls hope Rose returns this time around indicates a more aggressive approach in rehab. The team immediately ruled him out of the entire campaign in 2013-14 despite his injury happening in mid-November. Rose would need to have surgery and complete rehab in under two months to make it back before the end of the regular season.
Chicago has given no timetable for his return at this time. Doctors will provide a more formal prognosis after his surgery Friday, which will likely tell the team whether its hopes of a return can be realized.
Rose was averaging 18.4 points and 5.0 assists on 40.7 percent shooting before the injury.
