Utah vs. Oregon: Score and Twitter Reaction for Ducks' Upset Win

Joseph ZuckerFeb 22, 2015

The Oregon Ducks (20-8, 10-5 Pac-12) picked up their biggest win of the season, upsetting the ninth-ranked Utah Utes (21-5, 11-3 Pac-12), 69-58, in Eugene on Sunday afternoon.

The win made for what Sports Illustrated's Seth Davis thought was one of the more odd court-rushes of the season:

Utes senior guard Delon Wright did his best to push Utah through to victory, leading all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting. However, he had little support of which to speak. The rest of Utah's starting five outscored him by only two points.

ESPN's Fran Fraschilla wondered if Wright should've been a little more assertive on the court with his teammates failing to produce:

Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak spoke to reporters after the game about his team's offensive struggles.

"Guys get up in us (on defense) and we've got to be able to make some plays and feed the post," Krystkowiak said. "I thought we were miserable at getting the ball inside. "Then when we did get the ball inside, we didn't finish very strong. That's something we've got to polish up this week."

Compare Utah's reliance on Wright to Oregon's more balanced offensive attack. Three Ducks put up double-digit point totals: junior forward Elgin Cook, senior guard Joseph Young and freshman forward Dillon Brooks.

Brooks was the star, leading the Ducks with 19 points and adding seven rebounds. His massive dunk in the second half put an exclamation point on the result:

ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman praised the work of Oregon head coach Dana Altman. The Ducks only played eight players on Sunday outside of garbage time:

Altman praised Brooks' efforts following the game when talking to the media.

"I thought he hit big buckets for us," Altman said. "He really was aggressive taking the ball to the hole. We ran a couple things for him late because he did have the hot hand, and he responded pretty well."

This is the kind of win that might put Oregon over the top in terms of an NCAA tournament bid. Eamonn Brennan of ESPN.com listed the Ducks among those teams still needing to impress the selection committee.

Davis noted how this was essentially a must-win game for the Ducks if they wanted to have any shot of making the Big Dance:

Sunday's victory didn't necessarily secure an at-large spot for Oregon on its own, but as long as the team finishes up the regular season strong and doesn't embarrass itself in the conference tournament, it should be dancing come March.

Utah, meanwhile, still has a shot at capturing the regular-season Pac-12 title. The Utes are a game back of No. 7 Arizona but play the Wildcats at home next Saturday. A win there, and this defeat will be all but forgotten.
