Kansas Team Manager Dresses for Saturday's Game vs. TCU

Tyler BrookeFeb 21, 2015

Kansas Jayhawks team manager Chris Huey is a 6'7" senior and former NAIA college basketball player. However, due to three separate instances of a collapsed lung, Huey left Saint Mary to go to school at Kansas and serve as the team's manager.

On Saturday, the Jayhawks and coach Bill Self rewarded Huey for all of his hard work. Prior to the game against TCU, Self announced that Huey would dress for the game. Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star provided some background information on the decision to let Huey dress:

"

“He’s unbelievably bright,” Self will say. “You can tell him anything, and he’ll remember it. He’s been a big asset for us.”

So much so, in fact, that Self approached Huey in the weeks leading up to Saturday’s game against TCU. After a season on the scout team, Self wanted to offer a reward: Huey would suit up against TCU, don a Kansas uniform and take his place on the bench -- just like the rest of the players. In the days before the game, Self kept the gesture quiet. But around the KU basketball office, staffers were busy putting him on the official roster, finding proper gear and adding his head shot to the pregame notes.

The team's official Twitter account shared a picture of Huey with his game jersey:

By the end of the game, Huey actually got to check in, and as you can see in the video above, the Kansas students went nuts cheering for the manager who the players lovingly refer to as "Scarecrow."
