North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Duke Blue Devils: Live Score, Highlights, Analysis

Brian ChenFeb 18, 2015

Duke and North Carolina played another instant classic Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, with the host Blue Devils pulling out a 92-90 overtime victory.

The fourth-ranked Blue Devils (23-3, 10-3 ACC) needed an 11-2 run over the final 2:24 of regulation to force overtime, then held on in the extra period despite making only three of nine free throws.

Tyus Jones forced overtime—the first in the series since 2004—on a basket with 27.5 remaining, and then in OT he made a pair of free throws in the final minute to ice the victory.

No. 15 UNC (18-8, 8-5) got a free throw from Nate Britt with 3.5 seconds left to pull within two, but after Britt deliberately missed the second try, the Tar Heels were unable to get a potential tying shot off.

Jones had 22 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, while Quinn Cook added 22 points, including six three-pointers, for the Blue Devils.

Duke ran out to a quick 20-8 lead and seemed to be poised for a blowout, but shoddy defense and persistent play from Carolina made a game of it at halftime. The Heels used a 6-0 run in the final minute to go into the locker room down 49-42, and early in the second half they scored 13 straight points to take the lead and control much of the period.

UNC led 79-70 after J.P. Tokoto made a jumper with 2:41 left, but after that it was all Duke.

Jahlil Okafor, who suffered an ankle injury late in the first half and was mostly ineffective after that, gave Duke the lead for good with a basket with 1:41 left in overtime. Okafor finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds, but he was also 0-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Kennedy Meeks and Brice Johnson had 18 points each for North Carolina, with Johnson adding 12 rebounds but also fouling out early in overtime. Tokoto had 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while UNC also got 12 from Isaiah Hicks and 11 from Nate Britt.

Leading scorer Marcus Paige had only five points, making just two of 11 shots.

The rematch is March 7 at Chapel Hill.
