Channing Frye Injury: Updates on Magic Forward's Finger and Return
Orlando Magic forward Channing Frye will not return to Wednesday night's game against the New York Knicks after suffering a dislocated left index finger.
Frye, 31, went down early in the third quarter and was replaced by Kyle O'Quinn. He had only three points and a steal in 10 minutes of action, ceding most of his playing time to O'Quinn and Dewayne Dedmon in the first half. The trio of O'Quinn, Dedmon and rookie Aaron Gordon will handle most of the minutes at power forward for the remainder of Wednesday night.
Frye, in the first season of a four-year, $32 million contract, has largely been a disappointment. He is averaging 7.7 points and 4.3 rebounds, numbers a far cry from his 2013-14 return to form in Phoenix. While Frye remains an excellent three-point shooter—his 39.4 percent rate from beyond the arc is better than his overall field-goal percentage—he's struggled defensively and hasn't contributed in other areas.
The Magic have been six points per 100 possessions better with Frye on the bench this season, per Basketball-Reference. Most of their struggles have come on the defensive end, which is much less of a problem with O'Quinn, who has emerged as a stellar rim protector.
Orlando does not play again until after the All-Star break, so it's unlikely Frye misses much (if any) time beyond Wednesday.
