Keith Smith to SDSU: Aztecs Land 4-Star SF Prospect
While Steve Fisher is still compiling his 2015 recruiting class, the San Diego State head coach has landed his first big fish of 2016. Keith Smith, a 4-star forward, gave his verbal commitment to the Aztecs on Tuesday, spurning interest from a number of high-profile West Coast programs.

Smith, a product of Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, is the No. 67 overall prospect in the class of 2016, per 247Sports' composite rankings. He is the top-ranked player in the state of Washington, which could make his decision a surprise to some. Washington State and Oregon were two of a handful Pac-12 schools to show interest, though he'd only received offers from Cal and Arizona.
San Diego State pulling ahead of the pack was foreshadowed last month when Smith granted Fisher his first visit. He has not officially visited any other school. Under terms of his verbal commitment, Smith will still be able to take visits and keep his options open if he so chooses. National signing day for his class is still well more than a year away, so it's possible we're not hearing the last of Smith's recruitment.
An all-around solid prospect, Smith has an above-average jumper and excels with the ball in his hand. As a sophomore, he averaged 20.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists. If his ascent continues and he affirms his commitment to San Diego State come 2016, Fisher may wind up with the type of class that turns the Aztecs into a consistent national power.
For now, though, fingers will be crossed that he sticks to his verbal.
