Curry and Thompson Become Rare Teammates with 50-Point Games in Season
When Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry scored 51 points in Wednesday's 128-114 win over the Dallas Mavericks, he and Klay Thompson became the first teammates since 1994-95 to record 50-point games in the same season, per ESPN Stats & Info.
The feat has only been accomplished seven times since at least 1960-61, with Golden State's Splash Brothers most recently joined by Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson of the Mavericks (1994-95) as well as Dana Barros and Willie Burton of the Philadelphia 76ers (1994-95).
Only the 1961-62 Los Angeles Lakers had three players record 50-point games in the same season, with Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Rudy LaRusso doing the honors.
Curry's big night included a 23-point third quarter, representing the second-highest scoring total in a quarter this season, behind only Thompson's record-setting performance of 37 points (also in the third quarter) from Jan. 23 against the Sacramento Kings, per ESPN Stats & Info.
With 10 three-pointers in Wednesday's game, Curry set a record of his own, becoming the first player to have multiple games in a career with 50-plus points and 10 or more three-pointers, per the Elias Sports Bureau (via NBA.com/stats).
In fact, J.R. Smith is the only other player to hit 10 or more three-pointers multiple times, having done it on three separate occasions, per the Elias Sports Bureau (via NBA.com/stats).
Given that he already has an argument to be considered the NBA's best shooter of all time, Curry figures to eventually break Smith's record.
For now, Curry and Thompson will set their sights on the top seed in the Western Conference, carrying a three-game lead over the Memphis Grizzlies into Friday's marquee matchup with the Atlanta Hawks.
