In August 2014, Oden was accused of punching his ex-girlfriend, with a witness quoted as saying he "punched her in the face," per Bill McCleery and Matthew Glenesk of The Indianapolis Star.

In Adams' report, he is quoted as telling police, "I was wrong, and I know what has to happen."

Oden is a free agent and eligible to sign with any team, but he told Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon-Journal in November that there were other things he needed to take care of:

Taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft, Oden has not lived up to his lofty draft status and last played with the Miami Heat in 2014.

The 27-year-old's NBA career stalled due to a series of injuries. He appeared in just 105 games from 2007 to 2014.
