NFL Draft 2015: Order and Predictions for Top Prospects After Super Bowl

R. Cory SmithFeb 2, 2015

The New England Patriots are still dealing with a Super Bowl hangover on Monday morning. Every other franchise, on the other hand, is already plotting toward taking them down next season.

Part of that process is the 2015 NFL draft, the order of which is finally set after Sunday night. The Patriots will now have the final selection, with the Seahawks sitting at No. 31 following the loss in the big game.

Luckily, there's an entire class of promising prospects for teams to build around. Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota generate the most buzz, but there are playmakers all over the board.

Top Prospects to Watch

Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State

Despite a trying season for Winston, the former Florida State quarterback remains one of the top prospects in the draft. In fact, he's considered the No. 1 quarterback by CBS Sports.

Off-the-field issues for Winston along with underwhelming statistics hampered his stock during the season. But after the College Football Playoff, Winston emerged as the best signal-caller in the class. ESPN College Football takes a look at Mel Kiper's fluctuating ranking of Winston:

There is still a long process ahead of Winston to prove he's worthy of being the first quarterback chosen. During the NFL Scouting Combine and his Pro Day, Winston will look to showcase his skills. Having a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team in need of a quarterback at the top of the first round helps his chances.

However, The New York Times notes that he might not be worth the risk:

The former Heisman winner clearly has the makeup of a franchise quarterback. Given the shoulder injury to Mariota and the weak signal-caller class, Winston will be the top overall pick by the Bucs.

Prediction: Winston goes No. 1 to the Buccaneers.

Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin

By this point, all NFL fans know about how steadily the stock of running backs has fallen. Even with Marshawn Lynch carrying the Seahawks all the way to the Super Bowl, tailbacks are still undervalued.

The last time a running back went in the first round, Trent Richardson, Doug Martin and David Wilson all came off the board in 2012. Wilson is now out of the league, while Richardson and Martin were disappointing in 2014. Let's just say those decisions didn't exactly work out.

But Melvin Gordon can change all of that. The Wisconsin tailback has the talent of a first-round prospect and is drawing comparisons to one of the best in the NFL. LaDainian Tomlinson offered his take on Gordon, via Chase Goodbread of NFL.com:

"

I think Melvin Gordon to me, is a guy who reminds me a lot of Jamaal Charles. So I think clearly he will be the No. 1 running back coming off the board for the simple fact that Todd Gurley is coming off of that injury. ...

If it hadn't been for that injury, those guys would be neck and neck for the No. 1 running back coming off the board.

"

Similar to Winston, Gordon's stock is actually helped by the aforementioned injury to Todd Gurley. If he proves himself during the combine, look for Gordon to come off the board by the Baltimore Ravens. With several offensive weapons already intact, the Ravens will look toward the future with Gordon.

Prediction: Ravens select Gordon at No. 26 overall.

Leonard Williams, DT/DE, USC

Along with the offensive talent in this year's class, there are plenty of defensive difference-makers. Leonard Williams just happens to be the best following the Super Bowl.

The USC product had a massive impact for the Trojans this season, leading him to the top of several draft boards. Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com provided his take on the lineman, via College Football 24/7:

Several teams early in the first round are in need of run-stoppers and sack artists. Williams did both while at Southern California, and he will likely be doing the same in the AFC South.

Two teams from the division reside in the top three, but the Jacksonville Jaguars will take him. The Tennessee Titans will waffle over a quarterback or a lineman, but they have a bigger need for a player like Randy Gregory. That will leave the Jaguars happily taking Williams at No. 3.

Prediction: Williams dons a Jags jersey in 2015 after being the third player chosen.
