Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports initially broke the news and provided additional details on the deal:
Cunningham appeared in 19 games for the Clippers this season. The third-year player out of Oregon State was averaging less than five minutes per game. He saw most of his action behind Chris Paul and Jordan Farmar at point guard.
Ben Bolch of the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday marked a key deadline as the team would have been on the hook for his full-season salary if he was on the roster after 5 p.m. ET. He also passed along comments from head coach Doc Rivers.
"He's a great kid and he works his butt off for us," Rivers said. "We like him. We like him a lot."
Circumstances forced the move, though. It allows the Clippers to free up some cash and have an available spot to sign a free agent or for a separate trade before the deadline.
His small role didn't warrant keeping him despite Rivers applauding his effort.
