Jesse Morgan, Will Cummings and Quenton DeCosey combined for 54 points, outscoring the whole of the Jayhawks' roster, propelling Temple to the unexpected upset. Kansas had no answer for the Temple trio, which shot 17-of-27 from the field, including 6-of-13 from behind the arc.
As a team, the Owls shot a cool 28-of-48 (58.3 percent) from the field. They entered the night ranked 334th in field-goal percentage as a team (36.9 percent).
Kansas coach Bill Self was blunt about his team's performance per The Associated Press, via ESPN.com:"We played tired. And we played like we were a half-step slow or even a full step slow in my eyes."
Temple head coach Fran Dunphy might have his team take the subway to games more often (via Matt Norlander of CBSSports.com):
Meanwhile, Perry Ellis, Cliff Alexander and Wayne Selden Jr., three of Kansas' top four scorers, combined for 13 points. Frank Mason III's 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting were all for naught.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, Self has lost three games by 25 or more points during his tenure in Lawrence. Coupled with the 72-40 loss to top-ranked Kentucky on Nov. 18, both of Kansas' losses this season fall into that bucket:
ESPN.com's Jeff Borzello felt that Kansas had moved past the Kentucky game, but Monday was a sobering realization of where the team currently stands:
CBSSports.com's Sam Vecenie lays some of the blame at the feet of the Jayhawks' freshmen:
"Still have never totally bought into Kansas yet. It’s a flawed team right now in that Self probably needs to trust the frosh more… (1/2)
— Sam Vecenie (@Sam_Vecenie) December 23, 2014"
"But the frosh haven’t really done enough yet to show that they deserve to be trusted. Without them, this team has talent question marks.
— Sam Vecenie (@Sam_Vecenie) December 23, 2014"
With the nature of the college basketball season, it's never a good idea to get too worried about a regular-season loss, especially one in December.
