Rondo Leaves Celtics in 4th Place on Franchise Assists List

Bleacher Report MilestonesDec 19, 2014

Following Thursday's trade from the Boston Celtics to the Dallas Mavericks, point guard Rajon Rondo ends his tenure in Boston with the fourth-most assists in franchise history, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Rondo's 4,474 career assists leave him behind only Bob Cousy (6,945), John Havlicek (6,114) and Larry Bird (5,695)—all Hall of Famers—in the franchise annals.

Had Rondo remained in Boston, he likely could have passed Bird at some point next season, but he would have needed at least two more years to have any shot at breaking Cousy's franchise record.

The 21st overall selection in the 2006 NBA draft, Rondo has spent his entire career with the Celtics, following a draft-day trade to acquire him from the Phoenix Suns.

In addition to ranking fourth in assists, he exits Boston with the third-most steals (990) in franchise history, though it's certainly worth noting that the NBA has only recorded this statistic since the beginning of the 1973-74 season. Otherwise, Rondo would likely sit further down the list, behind the likes of Havlicek and Cousy, among others.

In terms of per-game marks, Rondo is the all-time franchise leader for both assists (8.5) and steals (1.7), despite averaging fewer than 30 minutes in his first two NBA seasons.

Of course, there are also quite a few drawbacks with Rondo, as he owns a .405 field-goal percentage and .333 free-throw percentage through 22 games this season. He also doesn't bring three-point range to the table, and his steal totals overstate his true defensive impact.

Still, the Mavs are likely quite pleased with the trade, having turned three role players into a borderline star.
