That the Dodgers are rumored to be glad to pay League multiple millions of dollars for the 31-year-old to play elsewhere suggests he isn't wanted in the L.A. clubhouse. This comes days after the Dodgers designated another highly paid reliever, Brian Wilson, for assignment.
SI.com's Jay Jaffe weighed in on the bold decisions made by the new Dodgers front office:
Since Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi was a previous assistant GM to Billy Beane in Oakland, it is evident that he isn't too married to the idea of paying a lot of money for players who aren't quite up to par. Given his lucrative salary, L.A. should expect more out of League.
Control issues have hampered League's stint with the Dodgers, which may be expected due to the fact that he deploys a fast sinker, a slider and a splitter as his three primary pitches.
All of those have considerable movement and tend to break down in the strike zone, which helps prevent home runs and can produce lots of ground balls but also leaves League susceptible to walks.
League's 38-to-27 ratio of strikeouts to walks in 63 innings this last season is alarming. His 1.46 WHIP, which was just .09 lower than the previous year, was also a concern.
Anyone who takes League on has to know he comes with risk. However, his unique style of pitching, a change of scenery and the reported sweetened deal the Dodgers are offering may entice someone to pull the trigger on a deal.
