Rondo Records NBA-Leading 3rd Triple-Double of 2014-15 Season

Bleacher Report MilestonesDec 11, 2014

Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo recorded his NBA-leading third triple-double of the season in Wednesday's 96-87 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Already the only player with multiple triple-doubles this season, Rondo finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the losing effort, just three days after posting a 13-13-11 triple-double in a 101-93 win over the Washington Wizards.

His first triple-double of the season came back on Nov. 5, when he recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists in a 110-107 loss to the Toronto Raptors.

In addition to the three he has achieved, Rondo has narrowly missed a triple-double on two occasions, falling one rebound shy in a Nov. 12 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder then coming up one assist short in a Nov. 17 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

The common theme seems to be a lack of team success, as the Celtics are just 1-4 in games where Rondo either triple-doubled or just missed by a lone rebound/assist. Of course, the team is only 6-9 in its other 15 games, so the correlation doesn't seem especially significant.

While well on his way to leading the NBA in triple-doubles this season, Rondo could face some competition from the likes of LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, Kyle Lowry and Michael Carter-Williams.

James is the NBA's active leader in career triple-doubles, with his 37 sitting well ahead of Rondo's 22 and Kobe Bryant's 20, per John Buccigross of ESPN.
