Drew Stubbs Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz and Speculation Surrounding Rockies Star

Tyler ConwayDec 8, 2014

Add Colorado Rockies outfielder Drew Stubbs to the bevy of names being discussed at this year's winter meetings. Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reported Sunday that the Rockies contacted the Baltimore Orioles about a potential swap of Stubbs for a pitcher:

Kubatko did not indicate who Colorado could be targeting. The Rockies, who went 66-96 last season, are in the midst of a roster retooling under new general manager Jeff Bridich. No stone is expected to be left unturned as they look to bolster the young depth throughout their organization, and trading someone like Stubbs is a win-later move that's not as radical as dealing shortstop Troy Tulowitzki or outfielder Carlos Gomez.

Stubbs, 30, hit .289/.339/.482 with 15 home runs and 43 RBI in 2014, his first season in Colorado. The batting average numbers were by far Stubbs' career high, and he was the latest player to benefit from the friendly confines of Coors Field. Looking at his home/road splits paints a scary picture of a player that's far more flawed than his numbers indicate.

Stubbs hit .356/.388/.611 at home, producing 12 homers and 33 RBI at Coors. On the road, Stubbs hit a paltry .211/.283/.333 with three homer runs and 10 RBI in 180 at bats. Those splits have to weigh on the mind of any team looking to make a deal, as Stubbs was far closer to a league-average player for his career than the 2.5-win guy he was in 2014.

Stubbs will be entering his third year of arbitration and can become a free agent at the end of the 2015 season. It'll be interesting to see how much interest the Rockies can drive up on a home-dependent player who could be a short-term rental.
