NFL Quarterback Power Rankings, Post-Week 14
As the cream of the NFL’s quarterbacking elite rises to the top, so too do the teams they pilot. There’s a pretty good chance that if you’re one of the best quarterbacks in the league, your team is capable of winning each and every week. Better yet, nearly every one of the top 10 QBs will end up fighting for a playoff spot by season’s end.
Up north, a rookie quarterback is starting to ascend beyond some veterans as he continues to win games and put up some big numbers.
There are currently two quarterbacks ranked in the top 10 with a losing record, and they both happen to be from the NFC South and held back by terrible defenses.
So let’s see how Week 14 shaped this edition of the QB power rankings.
Methodology
1 of 33
These rankings factor in several major attributes for the quarterback position.
Personal observation and opinion play a key role. A general section for film-review grades form a foundation, but the output of these quarterbacks' most recent performances is what really sends them flying up and down the rankings each week.
Wins also give quarterbacks a slight boost in addition to their individual performances. The statistics used to help determine the ranking system are pulled from ESPN.com, NFL.com and Pro Football Focus (subscription required), unless stated otherwise.
Stats that are factored in include passer rating, completion percentage, yards per pass, rushing yards per game, touchdown-to-interception ratio, fumbles lost and wins.
As the season moves on, the weighted influence from last year's output will be reduced by 25 percent each week.
When more than one quarterback plays for a team in one game, the quarterback with the most passing attempts is featured in the slide.
Note: Total QBR is a scoring system that assesses everything a quarterback does on the field. It is explained further on ESPN.com.
Also, Pro Football Focus grades every single play of the season to generate a cumulative point total, which weighs into the metric as well.
32. Blake Bortles, Jacksonville Jaguars
2 of 33
This Week
Blake Bortles was unable to keep away from JJ Watt in Week 14’s loss to the Texans. He was also unable to generate much offense against a pass defense allowing 270 yards through the air per game heading into the game.
The rookie QB had just 205 passing yards on 39 attempts as the Jaguars managed only 13 points against Houston. Bortles and the Jaguars (2-11) blew their 13-10 lead at halftime, producing just four yards of offense in the third quarter while losing the game 27-13 on Sunday at home.
| Opponent | Outcome | Comp | Att | PCT | Yards | TD | INT |
| HOU | L 13-27 | 20 | 39 | 51.3 | 205 | 1 | 1 |
Season Average
It’s understandable for a young quarterback to struggle in his first year as a starter, especially on a team with an inconsistent running game and a struggling offensive line. However, Bortles has shown little growth as a starter since assuming the role back in Week 4.
He has thrown 16 interceptions in 11 games and has participated in only one NFL game that didn’t consist of him throwing a pick.
He has shown flashes of his potential, but the mistakes need to be cut back.

Next Week's Outlook
When Bortles and the Jaguars face the Baltimore Ravens, the main concern will be Baltimore’s formidable pass rush against a struggling offensive line.
If the rookie can find a way to win or even play efficiently under these conditions, we'll have to give him a lot of credit.
31. Geno Smith, New York Jets
3 of 33
This Week
The Jets headed to Minnesota in a game that had playoff implications. Geno Smith was named the starter and was tasked with avoiding a dominant pass rush that had tallied 35 sacks, the fourth-most in the NFL. On Sunday, the Vikings found their way to Geno three times.
Smith started off shaky with a pick-six on his first throw of the game. Eventually he would step things up by tallying 254 passing yards—his second-most of the season—in a tough overtime loss to rookie Teddy Bridgewater.

Smith has the look of a fringe starting quarterback at this point in his career. He has generated more negative plays than positive plays and gets flustered under pressure. This could be the result of the system and surrounding cast, but there’s really no way to know for sure. We will just have to take his struggles at face value.

30. Josh McCown, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
4 of 33
This Week
With Josh McCown getting the start in Detroit, the Buccaneers failed to find creative ways to attack the Lions secondary, which has played well all season. However, the vet did manage to rack up 250 passing yards on the day.
Detroit came in to the game allowing opposing QBs a passer rating of 81.9, good enough for sixth in the NFL.
Josh McCown was harassed all afternoon by Detriot’s relentless front seven that racked up six sacks and 14 QB hits on the day. Under that type of pressure, it’s hard to know what any QB is truly capable of.

Can you believe McCown entered the season ranked 13th on the list based mostly on what he did the year before? Now ranked 30th, the veteran QB is one of just four QBs with a negative TD/INT differential, the others being Geno Smith, Blake Bortles and Brian Hoyer.
It looks like it’s time to put in second-year player Mike Glennon.

Head coach Lovie Smith is looking to put the “best product on the field” this weekend against the Panthers. This means Mike Glennon could see a return to the field, as per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times (h/t Pro Football Talk).
29. Brian Hoyer, Cleveland Browns
5 of 33
This Week
Head coach Mike Pettine wanted to go with the QB who gave him the best chance to win against the 8-4 Colts. This game could’ve decided whether the Browns sneak into the postseason or watch the games from their couch.
Brian Hoyer did very little to convince anyone that he should remain the starting quarterback. The Browns defense ended up scoring more points (14) than Hoyer could generate on offense, despite a productive running game.
| Opponent | Outcome | Comp | Att | PCT | Yards | TD | INT |
| IND | L 24-25 | 14 | 31 | 45.2 | 140 | 0 | 2 |

Hoyer is currently ranked 31st in the NFL in QB ratings at 76.4—ahead of only Luke McCown, Blake Bortles and Geno Smith.
He is ranked lower then he has been all year, and as a consequence, he will finally be replaced by rookie QB Johnny Manziel.
This is a move that needs to happen now. Hoyer did a decent job finding wins on an offense that continuously overachieved, but the Browns' luck and his chemistry with his playmakers is no longer there. His 55.4 completion percentage is the second-worst in the NFL behind Drew Stanton.

28. Zach Mettenberger, Tennessee Titans
6 of 33
This Week
Zach Mettenberger was able to start in Week 14 against the New York Giants despite a shoulder injury that was not serious enough to hold him out of action.
Though the playoffs are out of reach, Mettenberger still needs as many opportunities from now till the end of the season to convince Coach Whisenhunt he can be the guy in Tennessee.
Mettenberger was sacked eight times in Week 14 and sustained another shoulder injury that led to an early exit as well as a Jake Locker sighting.

There’s no doubt the Titans have had a tough year, but Mettenberger has shown enough to at least be able to continue his journey as the starting QB in 2015. This in no way implies that he’s proved himself as the QB of the future, but his audition should be ongoing.

According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, Mettenberger suffered a sprained right shoulder against the Giants. This time, it looks to be more severe than the one he suffered a week earlier. All indications are that he is likely done for the season. This means Locker will get the start and Mettenberger has made his last appearance in the rankings until the finale.
27. Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders
7 of 33
This Week
The 49ers tried to put pressure on Derek Carr in the same way the Rams did. This strategy made sense considering the rookie has never been good in the face of pressure and the 49ers have been known to create these problems for QBs, especially with Aldon Smith back in the lineup.
However, Carr stepped up and completed five of his six attempts for 79 yards with a touchdown against the blitz, as per Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com.

The first time the two teams played, it was in the Black Hole and the Raiders pulled off their first win of the season on a Thursday night. Now, Carr must pull off some similar magic and beat the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City is second in passing yards allowed (199), which should make it difficult for the rookie to succeed. However it is not a team that has generated many interceptions (4).
26. Drew Stanton, Arizona Cardinals
8 of 33
This Week
Drew Stanton faced one of the toughest challenges of the season Sunday. The Chiefs were allowing a league-low 197 passing yards per game. Considering the QB’s struggles, this could’ve been a long day for the Cardinals QB.
While he was still inconsistent, Stanton completed 50 percent of his passes for 239 yards in a close, come-from-behind victory over the Chiefs.

Stanton's Cardinals and the Rams will do battle Thursday night in a critical matchup with playoff implications. Stanton has not played against the Rams this season, but when Carson Palmer was the starter, the Cardinals won the game 31-14 back in Week 10.
The Rams have not allowed a point in the last eight quarters, so moving the ball on the defense should be valued greatly.
Something to watch out for—Stanton was limited in practice this week after dealing with a sore knee and ankle, according to AZCardinals.com.
25. Kyle Orton, Buffalo Bills
9 of 33
This Week
The Bills and the Broncos have two of the best pass rushes in the NFL. Kyle Orton is not known for his mobility, so he needed to get the ball out quick on the road before Denver’s defense added to its total of 34 sacks on the season. It got to him four times on the day.
Orton had a nice day in terms of statistics but didn’t play that well in situational football. He went 38-of-57 for 355 yards and led the Bills on two long TD drives in the fourth quarter after they'd fallen behind 21-3.
His 38 completions tied a team record, and his 57 attempts were a franchise high.

If a quarterback could pass for at least seven yards per attempt on average, he would be putting up fairly decent numbers relative to the league. Among qualified QBs, Orton is averaging 6.77 yards per attempt, which is 30th in the league.
On the bright side, he has thrown 14 TD passes compared to seven interceptions.

In a must-win scenario for the Bills, they’re forced to take on the red-hot Green Bay Packers. One positive for this game is that it is in Buffalo, and the Falcons racked up 37 points on this defense Monday.
There’s no doubt Orton will need to have one of his best games of the season in order for this team to have a chance. If he falters, we could see EJ Manuel reemerge.
24. Shaun Hill, St. Louis Rams
10 of 33
This Week
Shaun Hill and the Rams were licking their chops in anticipation of their Week 14 matchup against Washington. The Redskins had struggled to stop teams through the air, allowing a league-worst 107.8 passer rating for opposing QBs heading into Week 14.
Hill played solid football, finishing with a season-high 72.7 completion percentage and no interceptions.

In the last two games, the Rams have outscored their opponents 76-0. During that time, Shaun Hill has thrown four TDs and zero interceptions.
Hill hasn’t played spectacular, but he has been adequate. Most importantly, the Rams are finding ways to win, and his play has allowed that to happen.
He may not be as good as Sam Bradford, but he is a slight upgrade from Austin Davis.

The Rams have been hot lately and will be looking to play the role of the spoiler. Hopefully Hill doesn’t spoil the win for a defense that has played lights out.
23. Mark Sanchez, Philadelphia Eagles
11 of 33
This Week
On Sunday, we got to see just how effective this offense can be against the No. 1-ranked defense in the NFL. The Seahawks were allowing just 199 passing yards per game heading into the matchup, while Sanchez had thrown at least 300 yards in three of his first four starts.
Another thing worth noting: The ex-USC Trojan QB faced off against his former college coach, Pete Carroll.
On the day, Sanchez completed just 10 of 20 passes for 96 yards. He added two touchdown passes, but he also threw a horrible interception right after the Eagles defense generated a turnover.

Of the 38 quarterbacks who have played at least 25 percent of the offensive snaps on Pro Football Focus, Sanchez ranks 29th in its advanced passer rating statistic—which factors in throwaways and drops and discounts what a wide receiver does after the catch.
Clearly, the Eagles have a good system that has maximized Sanchez’s production.
He has 10 pass TDs and seven interceptions on the season, and he also has one rushing TD and two lost fumbles.

Sanchez hopes to wash the bad taste out of his mouth from the loss against the Seahawks, while the Cowboys will be seeking both revenge and a playoff spot.
22. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers
12 of 33
This Week
Colin Kaepernick needed to turn around an offense that has struggled as of late. Playing against the Raiders in Oakland should have presented a good opportunity to do just that.
The Raiders were just one of four teams allowing their opponents a passer rating over 100, and they had the fewest sacks in the NFL with 13.
Kap had just 174 yards through the air and added two TDs in the loss.

Kaepernick is the only qualified QB in the NFL without a pass TD in the fourth quarter. He is at his best when the 49ers set up play action and give him easily defined reads. His stock is sinking fast, and the 49ers could be in the market for a new QB this offseason if his production doesn’t improve.
It’s crazy to think that after the first game of the season, Kaepernick was listed as eighth overall on the QB power rankings.

21. Teddy Bridgewater, Minnesota Vikings

Week 14’s matchup pitted the Vikings against the New York Jets. This was a great opportunity for Bridgewater to keep his positive momentum going. The Jets had allowed their opponents a passer rating of 106.6 so far this season, which was among the worst in the league.

If Bridgewater can put up good numbers against the Lions defense, it will serve as an early test in his career. The Lions have been wonderful at making great QBs look bad this year. They are currently ranked fifth in the league in opposing passer rating, allowing a rating of just 80.8 to their opponent.
20. Colt McCoy, Washington Redskins

With Colt McCoy the starting quarterback in the Week 14 matchup, Jay Gruden decided to go with the QB he thought best fit into his offensive system. Jay Cutler was able to have some success against the Cowboys’ 22nd-ranked defense Thursday, throwing for 341 yards. One of the best things this struggling QB had to look forward to was a front seven that had amassed only 19 sacks on the season. Dallas failed to sack Cutler once the whole day.

18. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers
16 of 33
This Week
Cam Newton needed to piece together a good game in order to rebuild what seemed to be waning confidence on his part. The Panthers' Week 14 matchup was a rematch against divisional rivals. The last time the Saints and Panthers played, New Orleans won 28-10 and Newton had one of his worst games of the season, completing 10 of 28 passes for 151 yards and an interception.
This time around, Newton got the offense going by using one of his defining assets—his legs. By threatening the Saints with his legs, the passing lanes grew larger and Cam was able to do more damage than he had in recent weeks.
He had three passing TDs and one rushing TD in a blowout victory.

We have to give this kid credit for hanging tough in an offense with a struggling offensive line and a severe lack of weapons.

Last Sunday, the Giants traveled to Tennessee to take on the Titans in one of the more meaningless games of the season. Neither team had much to gain, and the only excitement to look forward to was rookie receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for the Giants. He did not disappoint.
Eli Manning played well enough against a weak defense, and the Giants had a convincing victory to show for it.

This seems to be the place where Manning fits best on the power rankings. Interceptions continue to haunt his performances (although not as bad as last year), and he has struggled to generate wins for the Giants like many top-level QBs have done with less talent.

On a positive note, Manning does have 23 passing TDs.

16. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions
18 of 33
This Week
Matthew Stafford had some positive momentum heading into his matchup against the Bucs. He was more than able to take advantage of a secondary that was allowing a completion percentage of 68.2, the second-worst in the NFL.
He completed 76.5 percent of his passes for 311 yards and added three TDs.

Stafford is relying on his elite receivers and has been putting up some impressive numbers over the last few weeks. In the last two games, he has completed over 75 percent of his passes while throwing for over 700 yards, five TDs and no interceptions. 15. Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals

This Week
Last Sunday, the Bengals hosted the Steelers in one of the more important games of the season so far.
Andy Dalton tried to keep pace with the high-powered Steelers offense, but Pittsburgh's firepower proved to be too much.

14. Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs
20 of 33
This Week
Last week, the Chiefs traveled to the desert to face a talented Cardinals secondary. Alex Smith is known to be a safe, controlled passer who doesn’t throw many interceptions. But the Cardinals were second in the league in that category (16) heading into the game and managed to steal one from the ultimate game manager.
His 293 passing yards in the loss was a season high for Smith, but the offense could only manage 14 points.

Smith played well in their last meeting but still came up short. If the Raiders can play as well as they did against the 49ers, Smith and the Chiefs could be trouble.
13. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Houston Texans
21 of 33
This Week
Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Texans headed to Jacksonville to face the Jags' 24th-ranked defense. This may have seemed like a relatively easy task, but the Jaguars did have one of the best pass rushes in football. They were third in the league in sacks with 37 heading into the game.

12. Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins

This Week
Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins faced the Ravens in Week 14. Baltimore had allowed the second-most passing yards per game (274) in the NFL going in.
In this battle for playoff contention, Tannehill built a 10-0 lead early on, but his struggles with deep-ball accuracy continued to cause the offense to sputter. The team managed only three points for the rest of the game.
The Ravens clearly have a lot of talent in their front seven, sacking Miami six times on the day.

Joe Flacco faced one of his greatest challenges of the season when he went up against the Dolphins defense in Week 14. Miami had allowed 198 yards in the air per game, which was one yard shy of the least amount in the NFL.

10. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks
24 of 33
This Week
Russell Wilson needed to keep his legs warm and loose last Sunday against the Eagles. Philly’s defense was second in the league in sacks (42) and was fresh off of a game in which it made Tony Romo look like a senior citizen. The stakes were high for both teams, but the Seahawks dominated the day.
Wilson had more passing yards (263) than he had in the last six weeks to go with a pair of TDs and no interceptions.

The reason Wilson ranks so high without putting up the big numbers most QBs in the top 10 do is because he has been tremendous with his legs and in avoiding turnovers.
Wilson also has five rushing TDs and is one of just two QBs to start every game and not lose a fumble. That means his five interceptions are the only turnovers he’s had all season. Aaron Rodgers is the only QB to have fewer turnovers while starting every game.

The odds were already stacked against the Falcons in their Monday night matchup against the Packers in Green Bay, but Matt Ryan had his offense ready to fight till the end in hopes of taking the NFC South division. Green Bay was allowing opposing QBs an impressively low 82.0 passer rating.
Ryan unloaded on Green Bay in Lambeau Field with 375 passing yards and a season-high four passing TDs. However, he was not able to overcome the spectacle that is Aaron Rodgers.

Tony Romo squared off against the Bears in Chicago for the Thursday night game. Chicago had struggled against the pass all year, allowing 271 receiving yards per game. This turned out to be the perfect game for Romo to rebound from a poor showing on Thanksgiving.
He completed 80.8 percent of his passes and threw three TD passes and no interceptions.

Romo had one of his worst games of the season last time the two team played. Expect this outcome to be different.
7. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers
27 of 33
This Week
Philip Rivers is now 1-6 against the New England Patriots. But he has been one of the most impressive QBs of 2014. The game was in San Diego, and the Patriots entered the contest with the 19th-ranked defense in terms of yards allowed.
Rivers had only 189 yards passing on 33 attempts and 14 points. This marked just the third game this season where the Chargers had fewer than 200 yards through the air.

Despite that, San Diego’s QB is ranked fifth in Total QBR at 73.3 and third in the league with a 68.5 percent completion percentage.

Rivers will be seeking revenge against the Broncos, who beat the Chargers back in October, 21-35. Now, the Chargers get a chance to even the score in San Diego in an important divisional game.
6. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts
28 of 33
This Week
Andrew Luck failed to bring his A-game against a motivated Browns team that was allowing opposing QBs a league-low 74.1 passer rating while leading the league with 17 interceptions thus far.
Luck started out the game struggling with turnovers, punts and incompletions. However, he rebounded to throw for 294 yards and a pair of scores to T.Y Hilton.
His 45.3 percent completion rate was his first game below 50 percent since Week 9 of 2013

The reasons Luck isn’t ranked higher, despite leading the league in passing yards (4,305) and passing TDs, is because he is tied with Cutler with the most fumbles lost at the QB position, and only two QBs (Cutler and Bortles) have thrown more interceptions than Luck has. In addition, Luck is ranked 21st among qualified QBs in completion percentage (61.9).

The Colts are set to play the Houston Texans for the second time this season. Last time the two teams played, it was a close game, and Luck found a way to edge the Texans out. Per usual, he will need to be careful not to fall into the arms of JJ Watt, who is unquestionably the most disruptive defender in the NFL.
5. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos
29 of 33
This Week
Last Sunday, Peyton Manning faced the relentless pass rush of the Bills. The Bills defense was allowing just 216 passing yards per game while leading the league with 48 sacks. The key to this game for Denver was keeping its aging QB healthy, and that part of the game plan was achieved.
However, Manning failed to throw a touchdown pass, ending his streak at 54 straight games with a scoring strike. He was also limited to a season-low 173 yards through the air.

It seems weird to see Manning ranked fifth after having a stranglehold over the top spot for so long, but the bottom line is that he has struggled as of late, throwing multiple interceptions in four of his last six games.

This could easily be one of the games that comes down to the last possession.
4. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
30 of 33
This Week
Drew Brees is one of the most accurate QBs in the NFL. Last week, he faced the Carolina Panthers in a divisional rematch. The Panthers were allowing 67.9 percent of their opponents' passes to be completed on the season.
Apparently, that defense came ready to play. Brees was held to a 59.2 percent completion percentage and 235 passing yards in the blowout loss.

With the Saints struggling the way they are this year, many people might be fooled into thinking the play of Brees has contributed to this. However, Pro Football Focus creates its own passer rating, which takes into account throw aways, drops and what a receiver does after the catch to provide a more accurate assessment of a QB’s performance.
Brees is ranked second among QBs with a rating of 96.83. He also has the second-highest grade at the quarterback position, via PFF.

The Bears have the 28th-ranked defense, which means there should be plenty of opportunities for Brees to have success.
3. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers
31 of 33
This Week
Big Ben Roethlisberger needed an important divisional win against the Bengals last Sunday in order to keep his playoff hopes alive. Cincinnati had the 21st-ranked defense, but it was also second in the league with an opposing passer rating of 75.0. Cincy had allowed the fewest passing TDs (11) up to that point as well.
This meant the Steelers had to earn everything they got through the air.
Having said all that, it tells you something that Roethlisberger was able to put up 350 passing yards and three TDs in the big-time win.

Sunday Night Football was an exciting game last week, as Tom Brady and the Patriots headed to San Diego to take on the Chargers' eighth-ranked defense. Though formidable, the Chargers had a weakness that played right into the hands of Brady’s strengths. San Diego had just 18 sacks on the season, which meant Brady had plenty of time to pick apart this secondary while throwing for 317 yards.
Brady dropped back 44 times and was only sacked one time on the day.

1. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
33 of 33

Monday Night Football was an interesting matchup that featured the league’s top-rated QB vs. the worst pass defense in the NFL. The Falcons were allowing 292 receiving yards per game.

Rodgers is playing lights-out football and continues to separate himself from the pack. At this point, he has such a big lead in first place that it would take some pretty poor outings, along with incredible performances from the other top QBs, for him to fall out of the top-ranked spot.
The Packers QB currently has the best passer rating (119), QBR (86.3), yards per pass attempt (8.78) and TD/INT differential (+32).
There's definitely an argument to be made that Rodgers is having the greatest season for a quarterback ever!
