Michigan Defeated by NJIT at Home in Shocking College Basketball Upset

Adam WellsDec 6, 2014

The season of shocking upsets in college basketball continued on Saturday, as No. 17 Michigan was defeated by the New Jersey Institute of Technology 72-70 at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor.

Until this victory against the Wolverines, NJIT was most famous for having lost 51 consecutive games from 2007-09, via ESPN Stats & Info:

According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, the NJIT basketball team has been struggling to turn a profit during its time as a punching bag for others to beat up on:

The win also allows NJIT to take its place in the history books as having a perfect record against ranked teams, via SportsCenter:

After trailing 32-27 at halftime, NJIT came out in the second half on fire. The Highlanders scored 45 points after the intermission and got a critical three-pointer from Damon Lynn with just over four minutes to play after Michigan took a 59-58 lead.

Winfield Willis made the key play with less than one minute to play, stealing the ball from Caris LeVert to preserve a 70-69 lead. NJIT would get two free throws from Daquan Holiday with four seconds left that gave the team a three-point lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Despite the big turnover late, LeVert was the star of the show for Michigan. He finished with 32 points and had nearly as many field goals as the rest of his team, via ESPN Stats & Info:

If there is a positive to take away from this loss, Rob Dauster of College Basketball Talk suggests the Wolverines seem to have found their go-to guy:

Michigan falls to 6-2 this season and seems likely to drop out of the rankings when they are released on Monday. The Wolverines have been one of the best teams in the country over the last two years, reaching the championship game in 2013 and Elite Eight in 2014.

Head coach John Beilein had a tough task ahead of him this season, losing Nik Stauskas, Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III to the NBA, but it seemed like he had the team on the right track. The Wolverines' first loss was by five points against 10th-ranked Villanova, so there's no shame in that.

Everything fell apart against NJIT, as no one outside of LeVert could do anything offensively, and the defense let the Highlanders shoot 58.7 percent from the floor. Michigan may be a tournament team by the time March rolls around, but there's a steep hill to climb out of now.
