Tim Duncan Donates $247K to Fund San Antonio 1000 Cancer Genome Project
Tim Duncan's already conquered the NBA. Now the San Antonio Spurs star will do his part to try and eliminate cancer.
Duncan, through both the Tim Duncan Foundation and Blackjack Speed Shop, will make a $247,0000 donation to the San Antonio 1000 Cancer Genome Project. The Spurs announced the news on Monday in a press release on their website.
According to the press release, the San Antonio 1000 Cancer Genome Project was created by START, which is working to discover new anticancer drugs. Hardwood Paroxysm summed up the project's overall aim:
"Cause Duncan's donating to looks to produce a full genetic sequence from cancerous and normal tissue, then open-source the data.

As Dan McCarney of the San Antonio Express-News pointed out, Duncan has a strong motivation to help fund the project:
"The idea that a group of cancer researchers were willing to set aside egos, to make the information freely available and work strictly for the greater good of curing cancer was exactly the type of cancer project I was willing to support," Duncan said, according to the statement.
