Breaking Down the 2014 Philadelphia Marathon
The Philadelphia Marathon is one of the largest events in the city each year, and the support from the local business and fans throughout the region is staggering. With plenty of intense running on the marathon course, supporters and volunteers were working extra hard to keep the masses hydrated.
Even ESPN’s Andrew Brandt was out lending a helping hand:
Not everyone was as helpful as Brandt, though, as marathon runner Jack Lindeman described a sign that did not help the city's tough reputation:
The crowds lining the streets were loud and full of energy, and the runners were able to feed off that.
None used that momentum more than eventual men’s winner Vassallo. This is the second victory of Vassallo’s career, winning the 2010 Philadelphia Marathon as well. With the victory, he has also qualified to participate in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trial.
When asked about his victory, Vassallo told Rob Senior of Philly.com, “To qualify for the Olympic trials was a huge highlight... And here of all places. I love this city!”
Another star that was born Sunday was women’s winner Petrina. While she ran in the Philadelphia Half Marathon last year, Sunday's run was her debut in the 26.2-mile race and she made an instant impact.
The Half Marathon finished earlier in the day, with Kiprono Kurgat winning the men’s race with a time of 1:03:58 and Etaferahu Temesgen won the women’s race with a time of 1:12:48.
The runners finished the event over an increasingly sunny sky and were greeted by hundreds of supporters at the finish line. With plenty of local bars and restaurants offering food and drinks to the runners, the party in Philadelphia is just getting started.
