Eagles vs. Packers: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2014 Regular Season

Joseph ZuckerNov 16, 2014

The Philadelphia Eagles had enjoyed a healthy run since Mark Sanchez replaced an injured Nick Foles at quarterback two weeks ago. The fun ended Sunday at Lambeau Field, as Aaron Rodgers carved the Eagles secondary wide-open en route to a 53-20 win.

The last time Philadelphia allowed 53 or more points was in 1972, per ESPN Stats & Info:

Philadelphia simply had no answer for Rodgers, who finished with 341 yards and three touchdowns on 22-of-36 passing. The veteran quarterback has now tossed 29 TDs without throwing a single pick at home, which is the longest streak in NFL history, notes ESPN Stats & Info:

Green Bay's Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb both went over 100 yards receiving, as the former caught four passes for 109 yards and a touchdown, while the latter went for 129 yards on 10 catches.

The weather forecast called for cold temperatures in Green Bay, which meant recalling Sanchez's record in games when the mercury dropped. According to John Gonzalez of CSNPhilly.com, the veteran averaged 187.2 yards, 0.9 touchdowns and 0.9 interceptions when the temperature was lower than 40 degrees.

"You just deal with it," said Sanchez, a native of Long Beach, California, and alumnus of USC, per Gonzalez. "A lot of guys grow up doing it. I had to learn how to do it. You just deal with it."

Fantasy football owners likely rejoiced as Sanchez picked up some garbage-time yards to finish with 346 yards through the air, two touchdowns and two interceptions. For almost the entirety of the game, though, he and the rest of the Philadelphia offense were playing from behind.

The Eagles didn't know what hit them in the first quarter. Green Bay jumped on them early and didn't let up until the second half, by which time the Packers had a 24-point lead.

A 64-yard pass to Nelson on the first drive of the game set up a 27-yard field goal from Mason Crosby. All told, Green Bay went 75 yards in a little over two minutes.

The Packers were more methodical on their next drive, eating up 6:47 as they traveled 88 yards. Davante Adams capped it off with a six-yard touchdown grab to put the home team on top, 10-0. Jason B. Hirschhorn of Sports On Earth feels that Adams' skill set is perfectly suited for short passing routes when you need a few yards, and that skill set was clearly on display Sunday:

Things went from bad to worse a little over a minute later, as Packers return man Micah Hyde took a Donnie Jones punt 75 yards to the end zone. Hyde made the first man miss, and after that, Jones was the only man standing between Hyde and pay dirt (via the NFL):

Just like that, Green Bay had a 17-0 lead, and it was still the first quarter. The Eagles stopped the bleeding in the second quarter with a 33-yard field goal from Cody Parkey. That was the first time Philadelphia had gotten inside the red zone but failed to score a touchdown with Sanchez under center, per Zach Berman of The Philadelphia Inquirer:

The Eagles' enjoyment was short-lived, however, as the Packers tacked on two more touchdowns to take a 30-3 lead. The first score came courtesy of a 27-yard reception from Nelson, while Eddie Lacy rushed in from a yard out for the other.

Another Eagles field goal from Parkey closed the gap to 24 points, 30-6, as the teams headed into the locker rooms for halftime.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette's Wes Hodkiewicz highlighted how well the Packers have started out games at home this year:

The problem for teams that dig themselves into an early hole against Green Bay is that it takes a massive effort just to try to tie the game, let alone take the lead. Making up a 20-plus-point deficit against Rodgers is nearly impossible.

Of course, it doesn't help when your defense continues to leak more points.

Crosby knocked home a 33-yard field goal to open the scoring in the second half, and Julius Peppers intercepted a Sanchez pass, running it back 52 yards to the end zone to extend the Packers' lead to 33 points, 39-6, a play highlighted by the NFL:

ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert couldn't believe how well the aging Peppers continues to play:

According to Hodkiewicz, Peppers is the first player in league history to register at least 100 sacks and four touchdowns on interceptions:

Jordan Matthews gave the Eagles their first touchdown of the game on a 10-yard pass from Sanchez with 2:21 left in the third quarter, cutting Philly's deficit to 39-13.

But the Packers would score twice more in the fourth quarter—a 32-yard Lacy touchdown catch and a Casey Hayward fumble return—to eclipse 50 points for the second game in a row. It's the first time in franchise history a Green Bay team accomplished the feat, per the Green Bay Packers:

Jeremy Maclin caught a a 20-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez, but it was pretty much academic at that point. That was the final scoring play of the game, as it finished 53-20.

A game like this begs the question as to why Green Bay isn't one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl. And then you remember road losses to the Seattle Seahawks by 20 points and New Orleans Saints, 44-23.

At their peak, the Packers are one of the best teams in the NFL. The trick will be playing at that level outside of Lambeau.

They'll head to Minneapolis in Week 12 to take on the Minnesota Vikings. The two teams played earlier in the year, with Green Bay turning a 28-0 halftime lead into a 42-10 victory. The Vikings should put up more of a fight, but the Packers will enter as the heavy favorites.

This defeat puts the Eagles into a tie with the Dallas Cowboys for the lead in the NFC East. Philadelphia hosts the Tennessee Titans next week as it hopes to get back in the win column.
