Coaches vs. Cancer Classic 2014: Teams, Schedule, Live Stream, Bracket, TV Info

Rob GoldbergNov 13, 2014

Some of the best college basketball teams in the country will get early tests in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Duke, Stanford, UNLV and Temple will each compete for a title at the Barclays Center on Nov. 21-22, but before that, they will go to battle with two games each on their own campuses. While the likes of South Dakota and Fairfield should not cause too much damage, you never know what can happen in this sport.

While the four host teams will go to Brooklyn regardless of the outcomes of the early games, these smaller schools have a real chance to turn some heads right away.

Duke comes into the year as one of the top teams in the nation thanks in large part to freshman big man Jahlil Okafor. Not only is he likely going to be the top freshman in the nation, he also has a good chance of becoming the best player in any class.

His coach, Mike Krzyzewski, had great things to say about the preseason All-American, via ESPN:

"

We won't have him long. We'll have him this year and then he'll be one of the top [NBA] picks.

He's really one of the great kids. He's 6-10, about 265. He has huge hands. So the ball is small in his hands. Part of that hurts him some because he's accustomed to rebounding with one hand, and rebounding is better with two hands. But scoring-wise he's able to do it. He's got incredible touch and really good feet.

"

Fellow freshmen Tyus Jones and Justise Winslow should add to a roster that already has a quality backcourt in Quinn Cook and Rasheed Sulaimon. The pure size and athleticism of this squad should make things very easy in the early going of this tournament.

Presbyterian had one of the worst teams in basketball last season, finishing with a 6-26 record while ranking outside the top 300 in both points scored and points allowed per game.

Senior Jordan Downing should be fun to watch after averaging over 20 points per game last season. However, Duke can let him shoot all day long and still win the game by a wide margin.

The same goes for the matchup against Fairfield, one of the worst teams in the MAAC a year ago. KJ Rose and Marcus Gilbert might end up creating a solid tandem later in the season, but they will not do much against the Blue Devils in this one.

After reaching the Sweet 16 a year ago, Stanford is looking to build off the success and be even better in the 2014-15 season.

The first person you will notice on the floor is guard Chasson Randle, an elite scorer who can make plays all over the court. Head coach Johnny Dawkins can explain the rest, via Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports:

One of the big questions for him this year is whether he can become more of a passer and create opportunities for others. He only averaged 2.1 assists last year but will have to take on a bigger facilitating role in order to get more players involved.

With McDonald's All-American Reid Travis looking to fill in for the departed Dwight Powell, Stanford has a chance to be a top squad this season, and the Cardinal can prove it with a strong effort in this tournament.

South Dakota will not be too much of a threat as the team enters a rebuilding process under new coach Craig Smith. Every player will fight hard to earn playing time going forward, but there is not enough athleticism on the roster to handle Stanford.

On the other hand, Wofford is a squad that reached the NCAA tournament last season and utilizes a strong defense and slow pace to keep opponents off the board. The Terriers return most of their key contributors from last season and have a chance to be one of the best mid-majors in the nation.

If Stanford is not ready, this could be one of the bigger upsets in the early part of the season.

Nov. 14American vs. Temple7:30 p.m.ESPN3
Nov. 17Louisiana Tech vs. Temple7 p.m.ESPN3

Temple guards Will Cummings and Quenton DeCosey took huge jumps last season and will now be team leaders on what can be an explosive squad. Even after a miserable year, the Owls should be improved behind head coach Fran Dunphy.

While that might not show in this opening tournament, the team should improve throughout the year until it is once again competitive in the American Athletic Conference.

However, the squad could face some trouble early in the form of Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs feature one of the best unknown players in the game in Kenneth "Speedy" Smith, a point guard who averaged 7.7 assists per game a year ago.

Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress named him one the best small-school NBA prospect in the 2015 class:

Louisiana Tech will run a fast-paced attack and should light up the scoreboard all season long. A win over Temple would not clinch a tournament berth, but it would certainly turn heads while putting the team on the national radar for the rest of the year.

American is not quite as dangerous as Louisiana Tech, but there are quality shooters on the roster like Jesse Reed, who can put up points in a hurry. If the Owls are not prepared defensively, they could end up going 0-2 as hosts in this tournament.

Nov. 14Morehead State vs. UNLV7:30 p.m.
Nov. 16Sam Houston State vs. UNLV5 p.m.

UNLV has been quietly becoming one of the most talented teams in the nation thanks to some great recruiting by head coach Dave Rice. Eric Bossi of Rivals.com broke down the incoming class:

Each player should have a big role this season, starting with Rashad Vaughn, an athletic guard who could lead the team in scoring in his first year. Transfer Cody Doolin can also bring some instant offense after running the show at point guard for San Francisco the last few seasons.

While there will be some growing pains as the new players learn to jell together as a team, the Rebels have the talent to play with just about every team in the nation. It will be surprising if this is not a tournament team by the end of the year.

Of course, there could be challenges early from Morehead State and Sam Houston State, two teams that won at least 20 games last season and return plenty of talent.

Angelo Warner will lead Morehead State after averaging 17.5 points per game a year ago although the team will miss the contributions of Chad Posthumus inside. Without much size, this squad could struggle against bigger opponents.

Sam Houston State will have a quick backcourt in Jabari Peters, Kaheem Ransom and Paul Baxter, who should be able to put up a lot of points against a young defense in UNLV.

A lot of the squad's success will depend on the shooting on that day, but these teams can pull off an upset if given a chance. At the very least, each of these teams can look forward to a lot of success in the subregional portion of this tournament.
