NFL Picks Week 10: Top Underdog Odds, Money-Line Advice and Predictions

Nate LoopNov 7, 2014

The Cleveland Browns pulverized the Cincinnati Bengals 24-3 Thursday night, setting the tone for what should be a wild Week 10 in the NFL.

The Browns now own a share of first place in the AFC North with the Pittsburgh Steelers, a lofty status for a team that put up six points in a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7. A strong running game and a determined defense have rescued them from NFL irrelevance.

A couple of other teams are making strides this season after poor starts. It stands to reason that they may have been overlooked by the oddsmakers and could very well be worth taking a closer look at in Week 10.

Moneyline Advice

Miami Will Declaw Detroit Lions

The Miami Dolphins are coming off a 37-0 plastering of the once-mighty San Diego Chargers, and they will roll into Detroit with truckloads of confidence. With a moneyline of plus-140, Miami stands to make some savvy bettors a good bit of coin Sunday.

The Lions' calling card this season has been their defense, which has allowed just 15.8 points per game. However, the Dolphins, who picked off Philip Rivers three times in Week 9 and held him to under 150 yards passing, may have just as good of a unit, per CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco.

Prisco likes the way defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle mixes up his fronts:

"

That's not to say Coyle lacks creativity. Even though the four-man fronts are his primary looks, he is not afraid to jump into three-man fronts or even five-man fronts. Last week against San Diego, he sometimes had four safeties on the field, which enabled Jones to drop down as a "buck" linebacker and help limit tight end Antonio Gates, who had three catches for 28 yards.

"

Quarterback Matthew Stafford has been mostly underwhelming this season and would be wise to pick on the diminutive cornerback duo of Brent Grimes and Cortland Finnegan, but he may not get a chance with the Fins' fearsome pass rush. Defensive ends/linebackers Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon have combined for 11 sacks and five forced fumbles this season.

The Lions offensive line has given up more than its fair share of sacks this season, with Stafford eating turf 24 times.

Detroit should get a boost from wideout Calvin Johnson this week, who's missed time with an ankle injury. He admitted to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that his ankle isn't 100 percent yet, although he said it "felt good" in practice.

Combine the emerging defense with a strong running game and the confident play of quarterback Ryan Tannehill (14 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2014), and you have all the makings of an upset in Motor City.

Buffalo Beats Out Kansas City at Home

The AFC North is undoubtedly the league's toughest division, but don't count out the AFC East—well, until you get to the New York Jets. The Bills, the Dolphins and the New England Patriots should all be fighting for playoff spots by the end of the season.

The Bills are 5-3 and on a two-game winning streak after a 1-2 start to the season. Kansas City has looked fantastic as well, outscoring its opponents 81-37 over the course of its current three-game win streak. Still, the Bills match up well with the Chiefs, and although they are slight underdogs, they should be able to pull out a slim victory Sunday after coming off a bye week.

Buffalo does well to drag teams into brutish, low-scoring contests. They rank just 19th in points scored but are seventh-best in the league in points against this season.

Veteran quarterback Kyle Orton has arguably outperformed Alex Smith as a game manager since taking over for EJ Manuel in Week 5.

He's received plenty of help from rookie wideout Sammy Watkins, who looks every bit the part of a No. 1 wide receiver. Watkins has racked up 279 yards receiving and three touchdowns over the past two weeks. It could've been more, but he learned a lesson in showboating the hard way in Week 8 against the Jets, per SportsCenter:

He did hurt his groin in practice this week but should be good to go for Kansas City, per John Wawrow of The Associated Press.

Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles looks to be at his game-changing, zigzagging best, but the staunch Bills run defense should be able to limit him and powerful understudy Knile Davis. Buffalo has allowed just 3.6 yards per carry and three rushing touchdowns this season, per ESPN.com.

The Bills did lose running back C.J. Spiller for the season, but they could get a boost from another reliable rusher this week, per ESPN's Matthew Berry:

Kansas City may be the more attractive choice thanks to its beatdowns of the Patriots and the St. Louis Rams this season, but it won't be able to overcome a hard-nosed Bills squad Sunday.
