Start 'Em, Sit 'Em Week 10: Final Review Before Thursday Night Football

Timothy RappNov 6, 2014

A lot of your "start or sit?" inquiries will be fairly easy to answer this week, as six teams going on a bye ensures that the pickings are probably slim when you select your lineup. Still, there are always a few players that engender debate.

Well, I'm here to help solve that debate. With a keen eye toward Thursday night's game, I'll help you review the biggest "Start 'Em, Sit 'Em" disputes of the week.

Start 'Em: Mark Sanchez, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

Cast aside your "butt fumble" prejudices and see Mark Sanchez for what he truly is—a middling quarterback on the league's most quarterback-friendly offense.

Keep in mind that during the Chip Kelly era, an Eagles quarterback (Nick Foles or Michael Vick) has reached 15 or more fantasy points in 16 of 24 games. Take away Matt Barkley's two appearances in 2013 in relief duty—generally speaking, there isn't an offensive system out there that can make a rookie third-stringer look good—and the number is 16 of 22 games.

Sanchez played well against the Houston Texans when called upon to replace the injured Nick Foles, throwing for 202 yards, two touchdowns and two picks (one of which deflected off of Josh Huff's hands and should have been caught).

He also gets a nice matchup against a Carolina Panthers defense that has allowed 17 or more fantasy points to quarterbacks in five of their last six games.

Given this system, with the amount of weapons Sanchez has at his disposal, it's hard to see him failing to produce decent numbers for fantasy owners. If you have Andrew Luck, Tom Brady, Philip Rivers or Robert Griffin III on bye this week, you could do far worse than Sanchez.

Sit 'Em: Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants

Eli Manning has been pretty darn good for fantasy owners of late, with a total of 43 fantasy points in his last two games. Don't expect him to keep the good times going in Seattle, however.

While the Seahawks defense started slowly this season, they've held opposing quarterbacks to a total of 29 fantasy points in the past three weeks. More importantly, they're holding opposing quarterbacks to just 14 fantasy points per game at home this season.

Take away Peyton Manning's 20 fantasy points in Week 3—because he does that to everybody, everywhere—and the Seahawks are allowing just 12 fantasy points per week to opposing quarterbacks at home, including the nine fantasy points they gave up to Aaron Rodgers in Week 1.

Manning is a nice quarterback to have rostered, either as a QB2 or a streaming option. I'd avoid him this week, however.

Start 'Em: Jeremy Hill, RB, Cincinnati Bengals

Obviously, if Giovani Bernard actually plays, Jeremy Hill's fantasy value will take a hit. But with that unlikely to happen, the rookie running back seems primed for a huge game.

You could point to his 24 carries for 154 yards and two touchdowns a week ago in his first career start as evidence of big things to come, and you probably wouldn't need to make another argument. But if you were also to point out that the Cleveland Browns have allowed 20 or more fantasy points to opposing running backs four times this season, well, it would be hard to ignore Hill's potential upside.

Start him and bathe in the fantasy points. Because trust me, folks, there will be plenty of fantasy points.

Sit 'Em: Doug Martin, Bobby Rainey and Charles Sims, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Yuck.

That's how I feel about this backfield right now.

Will Doug Martin play? If he does, what is his role going forward? How competent is Bobby Rainey as a starting running back? Can fantasy owners trust him? How many touches will Charles Sims get? Who will emerge from this backfield as the man to own?

Because that question hasn't been answered yet, it's hard to recommend owners start any of these players. If we learn before the game that Rainey is the unquestioned starter then, yes, he's a solid play against the poor Atlanta Falcons run defense. But until we have some clarity, I'd avoid this backfield.

Start 'Em: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

If you were worried about Mohamed Sanu's fantasy value potentially taking a hit in Week 9 with A.J. Green returning to the fold, perhaps Sanu's 15 fantasy points allayed those fears. Sanu now has double-digit fantasy points in five games this year and has gone for eight or more fantasy points in six of his last seven contests.

Suffice to say, Andy Dalton trusts him. And against a Browns defense that has given up 54 total fantasy points to opposing wide receivers in the past two weeks, you should trust him too.

Sit 'Em: Mike Wallace, WR, Miami Dolphins

For the first six games of the season Mike Wallace was a no-questions-asked starter, as he never dipped below eight fantasy points in that span. Now that he's scored just a total of 10 fantasy points in his last two contests, however, some doubt has crept in.

That doubt should be telling you to look elsewhere this week. The Detroit Lions have allowed just 15.1 fantasy points to opposing wide receivers, best in the NFL, and they've also held opposing quarterbacks to 11.6 points per week, second in the league. One of the league's best defensive lines has caused absolute havoc for opposing pass offenses this season.

Wallace remains an excellent WR2 to own, but if you have other options this week you should utilize them.

Start 'Em: Mychal Rivera, TE, Oakland Raiders

OK, I know I'm going out on a limb here. Frankly, relying on a player from the Oakland Raiders offense is always a bit risky. But hear me out.

Mychal Rivera has a total of 22 fantasy points in the past two weeks (15 receptions for 121 yards and two touchdowns) and has been targeted a whopping 20 times in those games. Against a Denver Broncos defense allowing 9.5 fantasy points to opposing tight ends per week, 25th in the NFL, Rivera could be a great option for owners who are without their primary tight end due to the bye weeks.

Sit 'Em: Zach Ertz, TE, Philadelphia Eagles

Zach Ertz has flashed so much potential this season, but the Philadelphia Eagles continue to utilize him less frequently than his fantasy owners would like. With Brent Celek such an important part of the offense due to his excellent in-line blocking, Ertz remains a player utilized in various packages but not necessarily in the team's primary set.

Ertz has just five catches for 52 yards in his last two games and has scored eight or more fantasy points just once since Week 2. Even in a tough week at the position, you can do better.

Hit me up on Twitter—I'll answer your fantasy questions and make some corny jokes, too. It's more fun than sitting down and scoring touchdowns with Anthony Fasano.
