Top Games to Watch

San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos

The Chargers tasted defeat for the first time in a month in Week 7, but it will be easier said than done getting back into the win column in Week 8. Not only is it a short week of rest playing on Thursday Night Football, but it's on the road against the NFL-best Denver Broncos.

San Diego was on a roll early in the season thanks to Philip Rivers' potent offensive attack, but the defense that played so well during that stretch has come back down. Jamaal Charles rushed for 95 yards and a score against them last week, and that was preceded by rookie quarterback Derek Carr throwing four touchdowns.

The Broncos aren't the team you want to face when struggling to stop opposing offenses, and Sports Illustrated's Chris Burke added why matters have only gotten worse for the Chargers secondary:

Recent history might suggest the Chargers are in good shape, after San Diego defeated Denver on a Thursday last season following a four-touchdown Manning performance. But before that, Manning had won his last seven Thursday night games dating back to 2006.

If the Chargers are for real in contending with Denver for the AFC West, they will have a huge chance to prove it Thursday. But in order to do so, they'll have to continue being the only team to have Manning's number on a short week.

Philadelphia Eagles at Arizona Cardinals

Both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Arizona Cardinals were lauded as sleeper Super Bowl picks out of the NFC, and each team has validated it through seven weeks with a big chance at continuing to do so in Week 8.

Philadelphia figures to be the fresher unit coming off its Week 7 bye, but it will have to enter a hostile environment and go toe-to-toe with one of the NFC's best. Other than a late loss to the 49ers on the road, the Eagles have no other blemishes on the season record.

What's more, Philly is finally starting to get healthier after injuries ravaged its depth chart earlier in 2014, as Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Enquirer reported:

LeSean McCoy is also excited about the showdown, per Fox Sports' Mike Jurecki:

The girls may be pretty, but McCoy will have his hands full on the field. The Eagles rushing attack—which hasn't been at its best, ranking 14th in yards—will go up against Arizona's run defense that ranks atop the NFL, giving up only 72.5 yards per contest.

Nick Foles should be able to generate some success against a surprisingly weak Cardinals secondary, but it will inevitably come down to the run game. How effective Chip Kelly's offense can be on the ground will go a long way in deciding which team will remain with just one loss.

Green Bay Packers at New Orleans Saints

There's only so much room for contending teams in the NFC, and the New Orleans Saints will have a shot to prove they belong in that category at home against the Packers on Sunday Night Football.

Things haven't been pretty for New Orleans, particularly late in games. The Saints lost their first two games of the year on late field goals, and a late interception from Drew Brees helped the Lions to overcome a 13-point deficit in the final four minutes.

That wasn't the start New Orleans wanted coming out of a Week 6 bye, and it will be hard-pressed to get back to the win column against a Packers defense that ranks sixth against the pass.

The Saints will be able to establish the run game against Green Bay's 31st-ranked run defense, but will Brees be able to avoid making late mistakes? With how magnificently Aaron Rodgers is playing offensively, there's no telling if Brees will even have a chance to win in the fourth quarter.
