Mike Trout Wins 2014 AL MVP: Voting Results, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsNov 13, 2014

After establishing himself as arguably the best all-around player in Major League Baseball since 2012, Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout has won his first American League Most Valuable Player award.

MLB announced Trout won the award ahead of Cleveland's Michael Brantley and Detroit's Victor Martinez.

Bleacher Report's Scott Miller provides information on the voting:

Trout, 23, turned in one of the best offensive seasons by any hitter in 2014. He set career highs in home runs (36) and RBI (111) and tied career highs in doubles (39) and triples (nine), leading the Angels to the best record in baseball during the regular season.

While he didn't steal as many bases this year (16), speed was still an important element of Trout's game in 2014. You can't score 115 runs without having some wheels.

He created offense for the Angels, as Marcus Thompson of the San Jose Mercury News highlighted during a September game against Oakland:

Advanced metrics also showed that Trout was far and away the best position player in baseball. His FanGraphs wins above replacement was 7.8, one full win better than any player in either league (Andrew McCutchen, 6.8).

An even more advanced breakdown of the numbers Trout has put up in his first three seasons, via Ace of MLB Stats, shows that he's done things already that took Barry Bonds an entire career to do:

Unlike the previous two years, when voters made Miguel Cabrera the AL MVP due to his insane offensive performance and status as a member of a playoff team, Trout couldn't be denied the honor this season. He elevated his power and did it playing one of the most important positions on the field.

Even last year, when the Tigers slugger won the MVP award, he said in a conference call, via Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com, that Los Angeles' young superstar was "the best player in the league."

Bleacher Report's Zach Rymer believes this might not have even been his best season in the big leagues:

This recognition has been a long time coming for Trout, which is saying something considering his age, but another stellar season and Los Angeles' success on the field helped propel the best player in baseball to the top of MVP balloting for the first time.

Trout's season didn't end the way he would have liked. He went 1-for-12 in the Angels' American League Division Series loss against Kansas City, but the franchise took huge leaps forward in 2014. There will be plenty of time for him to win a championship.

In the meantime, Trout can take some solace in being recognized as the best and most valuable player in the American League.
