Seahawks vs. Rams: St. Louis Upsets Seattle in NFC West Showdown

Rob GoldbergOct 19, 2014

It took some creativity, but the St. Louis Rams found a way to upset the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in Week 7 by a score of 28-26.

The Rams came into the contest with just one win on the year, which came in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, they played extremely well in all phases of the game to come away with the home win Sunday.

In particular, St. Louis excelled on special teams. One of the game's most notable plays came on a long punt return in the first half that featured incredible misdirection from the Rams:

That return gave St. Louis a 21-3 lead over the Seahawks.

And the Rams' special teams unit wasn't done yet. Clinging to a two-point lead late in the fourth quarter, the Rams converted a fake punt from their own 18-yard line to keep possession of the ball. Rich Eisen of NFL Network described the play:

Punter Johnny Hekker threw the ball to a wide open Benny Cunningham for 18 yards—enough to pick up the first down. ESPN's Trey Wingo was also a fan of the play, which could've lost the game for St. Louis:

Hekker admitted after the game that the play is something his unit has kept hidden for a critical moment.

"That's pretty sweet," Hekker said, per The Associated Press, via ESPN.com. "We've been practicing that play for a long time."

The Rams kept possession of the ball for the rest of the game, running out the clock. Rams quarterback Austin Davis had himself another strong day with two touchdowns while helping create this incredible statistic:

That was enough to get the victory and improve to 2-4 on the year while the Seahawks are now just 3-3 after consecutive losses. While there is clearly still a lot of talent on Seattle, there have to be serious concerns about a team with hopes to contend for another Super Bowl this season.
