Calderon Injures Calf in Preseason Contest

New York Knicks point guard Jose Calderon suffered a calf injury during a preseason matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks.

The New York Knicks PR account passed along news of the injury Monday:

After the Bucks win, Ian Begley of ESPN New York provided an update:

Calderon, 33, is in his first season with the Knicks after the team acquired him in the offseason from the Dallas Mavericks. Last year with the Mavs, he averaged 11.4 points, 4.7 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game.

Coming into the season, Calderon was set to take on a heightened role with New York in the triangle offense. Marc Berman of the New York Post shared his thoughts on the offense with Calderon at the point:

"

Displaying what Phil Jackson envisioned when he traded for Calderon in late June, the Spaniard was throwing crisp outlet passes and getting the fans out of their seats with one wonderful pump fake that had Brandon Bass of the Celtics flying into the air. Calderon then calmly sank the jumper with Bass out of the play.

"

The 10th-year player had a minor facial injury last season with the Mavericks but was still able to start 81 games. He has been a durable player in his career and has already served as a veteran presence for the Knicks offense thus far.

Prior to the preseason, Calderon spoke about working to improve the team as a whole, via Steve Popper of The Record:

"

Well, I want to be better. I don't know if it's going to be because of me. I'm going to try to do my best for this team to do the best we can do, go as far as we can go. It's not only one thing.

I think we are a team, too many things to say it's only one position, one weakness. Last year, I don't know how many wins [the Knicks] had — 30-something — I don't think it's only one guy.

"

Calderon's absence has left the Knicks without a true floor general, something the team sorely lacks on the offensive end of the floor. Hopefully, his pending return can rectify that issue.
