Iman Shumpert Injury: Updates on Knicks Star's Finger and Return
New York Knicks shooting guard Iman Shumpert is dealing with a finger injury in the aftermath of the Knicks' 109-95 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
Marc Berman of the New York Post reported the news of Shumpert's ailment:
ESPN's Ian Begley reported more detail:
Shumpert, 24, had an underwhelming season much like the rest of the franchise in 2013-14. Despite starting in 58 games—a career high—Shumpert had a career-low 6.7 points per game along with 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists.
This year he has upped his points (9.6) and assists (3.1), but his rebound production has dropped (3.5).
The third-year player still shows potential in the new system under coach Derek Fisher and team president Phil Jackson. Fisher spoke about the guard prior to the season, per Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com:
"I think anytime Iman's on the floor he [can] make a difference because of his activity level. He was impactful ... I think his presence was importance to us tonight. ...
That's what this preseason is about which is why different times we are watching different lineups.
"
If Shumpert is forced to miss time, the other two shooting guards will have to step up in his place. With J.R. Smith and Tim Hardaway Jr. at the position, the Knicks are equipped with plenty of talent in the back court.
Even with the talent at the 2-guard, his presence in the offense is crucial for the team to succeed.
