Jodie Meeks Injury: Updates on Pistons Star's Back and Return

Donald WoodOct 14, 2014

The Detroit Pistons signed shooting guard Jodie Meeks via free agency this offseason to help carry the offense into the future. Unfortunately for them, they will be without his services for several weeks.

According to Vincent Goodwill of the Detroit News, Meeks will reportedly be out of action for "a couple months" with a back injury:

Meeks bounced around the NBA before landing with Los Angeles in 2012. During the 2013-14 season, the 27-year-old amassed career-best averages in points (15.7), rebounds (2.5) and assists (1.8). He turned last season’s success into a three-year, $18 million deal with Detroit.

The Pistons were already thin at shooting guard and now will lean heavily on second-year player Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Unfortunately, Caldwell-Pope has been dealing with knee issues of his own and is expected to miss several games.

Detroit will now turn to the depth at point guard to find a possible short-term replacement for Meeks. Will Bynum, D.J. Augustin and Spencer Dinwiddie will all likely get chances to play at the shooting guard spot, but Pistons fans shouldn’t be surprised if the team hits the free-agent wire to add depth.
