Antone Smith's, Steven Jackson's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 4

Rob GoldbergSep 28, 2014

Antone Smith shined in limited touches for the Atlanta Falcons, while Steven Jackson had another pedestrian game, leaving fantasy owners to question who is the most desirable player in this backfield.

While the Falcons suffered a disappointing loss to the Minnesota Vikings, they were definitely interesting from a fantasy perspective with these statistics:

Most of Smith's production came on a 48-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, which is usually something to overlook as fluky. However, Chris Wesseling of NFL.com notes the running back is used to making big plays:

Smith has always struggled to get onto the field throughout his career, totaling just 12 rushing attempts coming into the day in parts of five seasons. However, he has three scores in that stretch while often breaking off huge plays.

Mike Clay of Pro Football Focus believes the player should get more carries:

For the moment, though, Jackson remains the go-to option in a crowded backfield that also includes Devonta Freeman and Jacquizz Rodgers. The veteran has been as consistent as they come, finishing with between 11 and 14 rushing attempts in each game this year with between 46 and 54 rushing yards. The only change came when he scored a touchdown in Week 3.

Unfortunately, this is not enough to justify putting in your starting lineup most weeks, especially when he is not scoring.

The Falcons are a pass-heavy team with a lot of options in the backfield. Except for an extremely favorable matchups during a bye-filled week, Jackson will likely remain on your bench for much of the year. This means that it would be a smart idea to trade him for whatever value you can get.

On the other hand, Smith might be worth a pickup in deeper leagues to see if the Falcons expand his role in the future. He is too risky to be in any starting lineups, but his upside makes the flyer at least worth a shot.
