Calvin Johnson's Updated 2014 Fantasy Outlook After Week 4

Rob GoldbergSep 28, 2014

Calvin Johnson had a disappointing outing for the Detroit Lions in Week 4, but fantasy owners have to make sure they do not overreact to the bad performance.

Despite a favorable matchup against the New York Jets, Johnson finished with two catches for 12 yards on two targets. Obviously, this is not what we have come to expect from the elite receiver.

However, a lot of this had to do with an ankle injury he sustained in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers. He was limited for much of the week before returning to practice Friday, according to the team's Twitter account:

This was enough for the Lions to keep him active Sunday, although Josina Anderson of ESPN noted Golden Tate was ready to take over the No. 1 spot if Johnson couldn't play:

According to ESPN's John Clayton, this ended up being a necessity as Johnson was limited throughout the game:

Tate finished with eight catches for 116 receiving yards, which is even more disappointing for Johnson owners hoping to see this type of performance. The Pro Bowler was certainly excited about the matchup earlier in the week, as noted by Rich Cimini of ESPN New York:

Unfortunately, it was simply not meant to be this week.

The good news is this is not something that should affect him for too long. While he might not be at 100 percent in Week 5, he will likely be better with more rest and could be close to full strength the following week.

Meanwhile, Johnson has been a huge part of the offense all season, totaling 34 targets in three weeks to rank second in the NFL behind only Jordy Nelson. Once he is healthy, he should be able to return to being the top option in Detroit.

Bleacher Report's Chris Simms has a different opinion:

Obviously, fantasy football owners are disappointed to see the receiver average just 5.7 points per game over the last three weeks after he was likely taken with the first pick. However, he is not too far removed from his 164-yard, two-touchdown performance in Week 1. There will be many more good days than bad days, and he should start every week he is active.

On the other hand, if there is someone in your league scared enough to put Johnson on the trading block, do whatever you can to acquire the big-time player.
