Terrelle Pryor Rumors: Latest Buzz and Speculation on Buccaneers and More

R. Cory SmithSep 22, 2014

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quarterback play thus far has been erratic, so changes at the position might be on the horizon. With Lovie Smith not getting great early results, the team reportedly worked out free agent Terrelle Pryor.

Field Yates of ESPN reported the news on Twitter:

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times later confirmed Yates' report:

The former Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks quarterback has played in a total of 16 games with 1,953 passing yards, 627 rushing yards, 12 total touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Pryor was released from the Seahawks prior to the start of the 2014 season.

Pete Carroll may have cut the quarterback, but didn't say it was due to a lack of potential. Carroll spoke about the decision following the release, per Clare Farnsworth of Seahawks.com:

"

Sometimes you just can’t afford not to have three guys because they’re so good and you just have to have them. We were very fortunate that we made it through with the two-QB thing last year.

... The two-QB thing really helps you because you get another football player on your team.

Pryor's workout with the team comes less than a week after a disappointing showing for the Buccaneers against the Atlanta Falcons. Tampa Bay was blown out by a final of 56-14, scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Josh McCown suffered a thumb sprain and was replaced by second-year player Mike Glennon. The former N.C. State quarterback came in and was effective, but was unable to dig the team out of the huge deficit.

Gary Shelton of the Tampa Bay Times shared his thoughts on McCown during his time with the Bucs:

"

Yes, McCown had a good year last year with the Bears. More and more, that looks like a guy who was playing above his head. There is nothing special about McCown, nothing that suggests he is elite, particularly not with ordinary teammates. Ask yourself this: What other team in the NFL would start McCown next week? Two teams? Three?

"

There is nothing definitive about Pryor's status with the Bucs, but it's clear the quarterback position has left a lot to be desired. The team might have worked him out, but a roster spot is far from guaranteed.

With targets like veteran Vincent Jackson and rookie Mike Evans, Tampa Bay has a formidable duo. Unfortunately, the team hasn't seen success under center to help those players thrive.

If the Bucs do bring in Pryor, who is still just 25 years old, they would have an athletic player to pair with two traditional signal-callers. But without a wealth of success at the NFL level, Pryor likely wouldn't be the answer for Tampa Bay if he's signed.
