Bobby Rainey, Mike James' Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 2

Sean ODonnellSep 14, 2014

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took on the St. Louis Rams on Sunday without starting running back Doug Martin, who was inactive due to a knee injury. While Josh McCown and the team's aerial attack wasn't much to speak of, its running game—featuring third-year running back Bobby Rainey—kept the contest close.

With Martin absent from Week 2 action, Rainey carried 22 times for 144 yards, adding three receptions for 30 yards against the Rams. He may not have found the end zone, but he was explosive out of the backfield, averaging an impressive 6.5 yards per carry.

Rotoworld's Adam Levitan tweeted his perspective on Rainey's future—even with Martin in the lineup:

Rainey may only be 5'8", but his 212-pound frame, low center of gravity and great burst allow him to gain chunks of yards at a time. He certainly proved he can handle a full workload Sunday, touching the ball a team-high 25 times.

While Rainey appeared very capable against St. Louis, his status on the offense should be monitored when Martin does return at full health. Martin hasn't looked solid of late; however, according to another tweet from Levitan, the team was looking to get him involved before he was sidelined for the week:

If Rainey is available on your league's waiver wire, make him your first priority due to his upside and potential increased role on the team's offense. His full fantasy value won't be realized until his workload with a healthy Martin is determined. Although, if Martin does miss any more time, Rainey is a solid starting option in any format.

As for Mike James, his value doesn't quite increase like Rainey's at the moment. He carried six times for seven yards in a supporting role Sunday. He isn't worth a flier at this point; however, if Martin misses significant time, keep an eye out for him as a potential handcuff to Rainey.
