Jeremy Kerley, Jeff Cumberland's Fantasy Outlook After Eric Decker's Injury

Sean ODonnellSep 14, 2014

The New York Jets found themselves in a close contest with the Green Bay Packers on Sunday thanks, in part, to some nice form displayed by quarterback Geno Smith early in the game. One big factor in Smith's success was wide receiver Eric Decker. The free-agent acquisition reeled in four receptions for 63 yards and a score, but left the game with an apparent hamstring injury in the fourth quarter.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News tweeted Decker's status:

Hamstring injuries can sometimes tend to linger for several weeks, and if Decker is to miss any time, wide receiver Jeremy Kerley and tight end Jeff Cumberland will suddenly find themselves on fantasy owners' radars.

Kerley will be in line to receive the lion's share of the targets in Decker's absence. While he only recorded three receptions for 22 yards on Sunday, Kerley was targeted a team-high eight times—he also added a 37-yard rush on an option out of the backfield.

Late in the fourth quarter, Kerley appeared to haul in a long touchdown grab; however, the play was blown dead due to a timeout taken by the Jets' sideline. Mehta tweeted the play as it happened:

While the Jets may not put up gaudy numbers through the air, Kerley will be the team's top option without Decker in the mix. Consider him a spot starter or flex option for fantasy purposes.

Cumberland was only targeted two times on Sunday, coming away with one reception for 14 yards. He was slightly more active in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders, hauling in four receptions for 50 yards, but isn't worthy of a start in any fantasy format to this point.

He could see increased receptions in Decker absence, along with receiver David Nelson, so keep your eye on the waiver wire if that happens to be the case.
