Robert Quinn Contract: Latest News and Rumors on Negotiations with Rams

Scott PolacekSep 12, 2014

Robert Quinn was one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the entire NFL during the 2013 season, and he is about to cash in on that success.

Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports reported that Quinn and the St. Louis Rams are nearing an agreement on a multiyear contract extension. Quinn’s camp believes the deal may even be done before Week 3.

Getlin also noted that the star defensive lineman is hoping to net a four-to-six-year extension that would pay him about $15 million per year.

Quinn led St. Louis with an impressive 19 sacks last year, which placed him second in the NFL to Robert Mathis of the Indianapolis Colts. What’s more, Quinn forced seven fumbles and was a menace to opposing quarterbacks all year.

Interestingly, Quinn was part of the same 2011 draft class that included J.J. Watt. Watt signed a record deal for a defensive player with a reported $100 million deal that included a $51.87 million signing bonus.

Watt’s deal likely improved Quinn’s negotiating position as a young defensive lineman who can wreck an opponent’s game plan.

Perhaps most encouraging for St. Louis fans is the fact that Quinn still believes he can improve if his comments are any indication, via Myles Simmons of Rams’ official website:

“I always set my bar high. No matter what I had the previous season, I always it extremely high. And I always strive for something outrageous, and if you fall a little bit short it’s usually a pretty good season.”

That type of drive will certainly help him stay motivated after this latest extension.

The Rams did pick up the fifth-year option on Quinn’s current deal back in August, but this reported new extension will change the defensive lineman’s immediate financial situation.
