NFL Picks Week 2: Updated Lines and Final-Score Predictions for All Games

Mike ChiariSep 10, 2014

After a 2013 season that saw an unusually large amount of favorites cover the spread on a weekly basis, it already looks like 2014 will be quite different in that regard.

Week 1 featured plenty of upsets and backdoor covers from underdogs, which sets the stage for an extremely intriguing season. The oddsmakers will unquestionably be more accurate as the campaign wears on, but there is still a great deal of uncertainty as it relates to which teams are contenders and which are pretenders.

With that said, here is a look at the current betting lines for every Week 2 game along with score predictions for the entire slate.

Buffalo Bills (Even) vs. Miami Dolphins

In a surprising twist, Sunday's game between the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins may very well be for sole position of first place in the AFC East. With the New England Patriots losing in Week 1 and the New York Jets facing a tough test against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, the winner of this game could easily establish itself as the team to beat within the division.

The Bills surprised many across the league by upsetting the Chicago Bears on the road in overtime in Week 1, while the Dolphins shocked the Patriots by outscoring them 23-0 in the second half to prevail 33-20.

It is difficult to pick a favorite in this game, which is why the line is currently even. All signs point to this game coming down to the wire, as both teams have strengths that could potentially carry them to victory.

Buffalo's quarterback situation is still somewhat shaky with E.J. Manuel trying to hit his stride, but it was second in the league in rushing last season and racked up nearly 200 yards on the ground against Chicago in Week 1. Also, the Bills were second in the NFL last season with 57, which is a big reason why they were able to sweep Miami.

Miami showed proficiency in those areas against the Pats as well. Running backs Knowshon Moreno and Lamar Miller gashed New England on the ground, while the Dolphins' speed pass-rushers gave the Patriots' offensive tackles big problems.

From an on-field perspective, this game is essentially a coin flip, but the Bills have an intangible factor on their side. As first reported by Tim Graham of The Buffalo News on Tuesday, an agreement for Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula to buy the franchise was reached:

That will unquestionably energize Buffalo's fanbase since it means the team will stay put, and it should amp up the players as well. The Bills' home-field advantage has waned in recent years to some degree due to the lack of success on the field, but Sunday's game promises to be the Bills' biggest in over a decade.

With that type of positive energy surrounding the team, the Bills will find a way to come out on top at home and seize the AFC East lead.

Denver Broncos (-14) vs. Kansas City Chiefs

The Denver Broncos entered the 2014 season with a big chip on their shoulder after getting blown out by the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Denver didn't play a perfect game against the Indianapolis Colts by any means, but they came away with a 31-24 win over a team considered by most to be a lock for the playoffs.

Quarterback Peyton Manning threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns, all of which were caught by tight end Julius Thomas. That performance only scratches the surface of what Denver's offense is capable of. Top wide receiver Demaryius Thomas didn't make a major impact, while new acquisition Emmanuel Sanders is still getting accustomed to the team.

Even so, Manning is excited about what Sanders does and will bring to the offense moving forward, according to Irv Moss of The Denver Post.

"

I think he's fitting in pretty well. It's not easy changing teams, changing offenses. He's gotten better each week. My confidence is high in him, started out the game going right to him, then had the long one to him where we almost got a touchdown. So I thought it was a good start for him in his first game as a Bronco.

"

Denver also has room to improve from a rushing perspective, and the defense showed some flashes as well in Week 1. On the flip side, the Kansas City Chiefs are coming off an awful performance that saw them lose 26-10 to the Tennessee Titans at home.

The Chiefs came up short in every facet, particularly in the run game. Superstar running back Jamaal Charles touched the ball just 11 times, which was a far cry from what he did in 2013, per Dave Richard of CBSSports.com:

With the Chiefs showing a willingness to abandon the run when they get down, look for the Broncos to do everything in their power to get the lead early at home. Denver averaged 31 points per game against Kansas City in two meetings last season, and the Chiefs were torched last week by a Titans offense that doesn't compare to what the Broncos can do.

With Kansas City looking very much like a team that will regress in 2014, expect Denver to coast to a fairly easy victory in Week 2.

Detroit Lions (+2.5) at Carolina Panthers

The Detroit Lions have been one of the NFL's most confounding teams over the past couple of years. Their talent level is quite obvious, but they have struggled at times to close out games and close out seasons. The Lions were in prime position to make the playoffs last year, but they fell apart down the stretch. It remains to be seen if they can avoid that in 2014, but their campaign got off to an ideal start.

Detroit was dominant on both sides of the ball in a 35-14 thrashing of the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. The combination of quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson has been the team's bread and butter in recent years, and that was once again the case in Week 1.

Megatron hauled in seven receptions for 164 yards and two scores, while Stafford threw for 346 yards and two touchdowns, rushing for another. In fact, Stafford was nearly perfect in Detroit's season-opening triumph, according to ESPN Stats & Info:

Things will certainly get a bit tougher in Week 2 as the Lions will take on the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers boasted one of the best defenses in the NFL last season, and they appear to be at that level once again in 2014. The Panthers shut down the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1, and they figure to welcome the challenge of facing the Lions.

Also, quarterback Cam Newton will be back under center for the Panthers after missing the first week of the season. That obviously adds another dimension to Carolina's offense, but he may not be 100 percent as he continues to nurse both ankle and rib ailments.

The Lions have a potentially dominant defensive line that can certainly put a hurting on Newton. That, along with Detroit's embarrassment of riches on offense, should put the Lions in the driver's seat.

It is understandable why Carolina is favored at home after what it accomplished last season, but the Lions are a team on the rise that is poised to make a statement on Sunday.
