US Open 2014 Results: Latest Scores and Draw Schedule for Day 13
On Friday, No. 1 Serena Williams and No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki became the women's finalists for the 2014 U.S. Open. With two men's matches already underway on Saturday, the final two competitors from the men's draw will be realized.
No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 10 Kei Nishikori kicked things off on Day 13, and Nishikori got the best of the top-seeded player right out of the gate, taking the first set by a score of 6-4. However, Djokovic wouldn't be outdone and surged back in the second set, winning 6-1 and evening the match.
The two men continued to battle into the third set, with the No. 10 seed gaining the upper hand early. He stunned the world No. 1 with his near-flawless play, winning another set on a tiebreak and taking control of the match.
One set later, Nishikori did the unthinkable—he took down Djokovic with a final score of 6-4, 1-6, 7(7)-6(4), 6-3. US Open Tennis tweeted the significance of the victory:
With the first match in the books, No. 2 Roger Federer will attempt to reach the final in an effort to earn his sixth U.S. Open title. However, standing in his way is the resurgent No. 14 Marin Cilic. Take a look at the day's order of play here.
Before that match commences, let's preview the impending clash.
Match Preview
(2) Roger Federer vs. (14) Marin Cilic

Before the tournament began, many tennis enthusiasts were singing Federer's praises due to his improved form and friendly draw. As it turns out, the hype surrounding the former world No. 1 was real. Federer cruised to the quarterfinals—dropping just one set in the process—before facing No. 20 Gael Monfils.
However, the No. 2 seed was put to the test against Monfils, as his endurance was measured in a five-set marathon. Monfils won the first two sets and looked good in the beginning of the third. It appeared as though Federer's brilliant run would come to a swift end.
But an unfazed Federer regained his footing to take the third set thanks to some very aggressive play, winning 12 of a possible 17 net points. Federer was tested yet again in the fourth set, but Monfils was overcome by errors, dropping another set to the No. 2 seed.
That's when Federer took over. A virtually flawless fifth set proved he still maintained the endurance to go the distance against the most difficult of opponents. The win gave Federer a great amount of confidence and momentum going forward.
SportsCenter tweeted Federer's remarkable comeback:
He gave his thoughts during a press conference, via USOpen.org:
"Yeah, I mean, it's just unbelievable to win matches like this at slams. You know, I have won other big ones in other places. But over best of five, saving match points against Gael in an atmosphere that it was out here tonight, it's definitely very special. I'm. Not sure I have ever saved match point before in a slam. If that hasn't happened, I'm unbelievably happy that it was today, because I knew I could play better after the first couple of sets. I believed I could turn it around from the get-go when the third set started, and I'm so happy the crowd got into it.
"
Cilic has traveled a rather difficult road to reach the semifinals. After defeating two ranked opponents, he found himself in a quarterfinal clash against No. 6 Tomas Berdych.
In a swift upset victory, Cilic used his hard-hitting ways to surge past his opponent in three sets for the right to face Federer in the semifinals.
During his quarterfinal bout, Cilic recorded 19 aces and won 84 percent of his first-serve points while his average serve speed measured 119 mph. This allowed him to record 46 winners and overcome his 36 unforced errors during the match.
Berdych commended his opponent after the match:
Cilic spoke of navigating the windy conditions in New York after his match, via USOpen.org:
"Yeah, it was a great performance today, I would say. Was very tricky with the conditions. Very gusty. I mean, for both of us. We are big guys. Not easy to deal with the wind and with, I mean, the ball moving in the air. I felt that I was using the wind a bit better today. Just considering the conditions and the opening of the match went in my side, that sort of relaxed me a bit more.
"
Should those same conditions persist on Saturday afternoon, Cilic's big serve could give him a slight advantage over Federer. He'll need every advantage he can get, as Cilic has yet to defeat Federer, going 0-5 against the No. 2 seed over his career.
