Twitter Goes Wild with Weird 'NBA Cartoons' Memes

Dan CarsonAug 27, 2014

Social media is a strange, insatiable creature.

Nothing can be happening or everything can be happening, and regardless of traffic, you’ll still find dedicated individuals pouring effort into weird trends and projects.

Such is the current state of NBA Twitter—a volatile land lorded over by Philadelphia 76ers rookie Joel Embiid and currently experiencing its most peaceful week of the calendar year.

The Kevin Love deal is done, Andrew Wiggins is in Minnesota and Donald Sterling is snoring idly inside a volcano lair. By all rights, everything is quiet on the professional hardwood front—except it isn’t.

People on the Internet are filling the void the only way they know how: memes—or in this case, cartoons.

The hashtag “#NBA Cartoons” cropped up late Tuesday night, and now franchises are competing to make the finest toon-related player Photoshops on the web.

The following are some of the best and worst examples we’ve seen, starting with the Indiana Pacers’ exquisite take on King of the Hill.

The Charlotte Hornets don’t seem to understand which insects make webs.

The San Antonio Spurs put it together, placing their sometimes-eyeless nightmare version of Wile E. Coyote up against the Road Runner.

The Milwaukee Bucks apparently don’t want their fans to be happy or to sleep at night.

The Phoenix Suns stuck to their old-school elegance with The Simpsuns.

Unlike Kyle Broflovski's mother, Kyle O’Quinn’s mom is a very nice lady.

From now on, any and all references I make regarding the Cleveland Cavaliers will involve the phrase “Thunder Cavs” and an obnoxiously drawn-out "Hooooo!"

Jeff Teague is Speed Racer, because he’s fast and jumps cars over awesome explosions (obviously).

Again, the Suns dominated this hashtag.

And there would be redemption for the Bucks, who made amends for their Pokemon-related misstep with a Yosemite Sam Cassell.

Last but not least, there was Isiah Thomas the Tank Engine—you know, if you need your program to ride straight off the tracks.

These Photoshops continue to crop up by the moment, so check out the #NBACartoons hashtag for more awesome and terrible attempts from NBA social media teams trying to burn a slow Wednesday.

Keep it coming, guys. I won’t rest until Clyde Drexler's Laboratory is done justice.
