Shaquille O'Neal Says He Spends $1,000 a Week on Apps

Dan CarsonMar 11, 2014

If you came here expecting to read about how much money Shaquille O’Neal blows each week on Bloomin’ Onions, you’re thinking of the wrong kind of “app.”

While O’Neal undoubtedly loves appetizers, his No. 1 infatuation is applications—as in, the kind you download on your phone.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the former NBA-star-turned-analyst recently admitted he drops some serious cash on phone games and applications.

“I probably spend $1,000 on apps a week,” O’Neal told The Wall Street Journal’s Evelyn Rusli.

Why spend so much on phone-based software?

According to O’Neal, he loves to be on the bleeding edge of cell phone innovation. He also likes blowing away deer on his mobile device.

“I’ve always been a tech geek,” O’Neal said. “I’m not ashamed to say I’m a geek at heart...last week I bought like 20 deer-hunter games. I like hunting the deer on my phone.”

O’Neal’s mobile-media compulsion should come as no surprise to his fans. He was the first verified user on Twitter and claims he called up Steve Jobs to ask if he could get the first iPhone before Apple released it to the public.

While it might sound a touch obsessive, O’Neal could be spending money on worse things than online deer hunting. He could be blowing a $1,000 a week on apps and 'zerts, which would be bad for business.

O’Neal is a big man, and one too many southwestern egg rolls would make fitting behind the desk on Inside the NBA a problem.
