Coming into the night, Manning was the odds-on favorite to take home the honor. In addition to earning his 13th Pro Bowl appearance, he won the AP Offensive Player of the Year and FedEx Air Player of the Year.

He set the NFL record for most passing yards (5,477) and passing touchdowns (55) in a season. And he helped the Denver Broncos to a 13-3 regular season, tied for best in the NFL, and a place in Super Bowl XLVIII.

ESPN The Magazine noted what the previous records were:

Not bad for a player whose career looked like it might have been over a couple of years ago. After those neck surgeries, many wondered if it was a mistake for him to step on the field again. One hit and it's all over.

That's why Manning's resurgence of 2012 and '13 is nothing short of amazing. At 37 years old, he's playing the best football of his career and made himself the most valuable player in the entire league.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, this is his fifth AP MVP award, which moves him two ahead of the next closest players:

The voting was nearly unanimous, with Manning earning 49 of the 50 first-place votes.

Tom Brady, New England PatriotsQB1

Former NFL QB Jim Miller was the lone dissenter.

Chase Stuart of FootballPerspective.com thought Miller was trying to draw attention to himself rather than voting in the spirit of the award:

While Brady did have a great season despite the numerous injuries to his wideouts and tight ends, his year didn't stack up with Manning's. Brady had over 1,000 fewer yards (4,343) and 30 fewer touchdowns (25). It doesn't matter how you try to break it down, Manning was the superior QB this year.

This is just another accolade for a player who's amassed a room full of them throughout his entire playing career.

The job is not over for Manning, though. In a matter of hours, he'll lead the Broncos against the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Like John Elway before him, he has the chance to step away on top.

No matter how many individual awards he wins this year, nothing will match getting Super Bowl ring No. 2.
