Fantasy Football Week 16: Buy and Sell Stock Report

Chris TrapassoDec 17, 2013

The championships are upon us.

If you're reading this, you've likely successfully traversed the unpredictable realm of fantasy football and are a game away from taking home the title.

While your rosters are likely just about set, let's look at some of the most notable performances—both good and bad—from Week 15 and decide whether we should "buy" or "sell" those individual efforts this Sunday.

Buy: Kirk Cousins, QB, Washington Redskins

1 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 29-of-45, 381 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins stood in for Robert Griffin III after a wild week in Washington D.C. and had a pretty nice day.

The second-year quarterback completed passes to nine different Redskins pass-catchers and connected on two deep strikes—one to Pierre Garcon for 53 yards and one to Aldrick Robinson for 62 yards.

There won't be many owners starting Cousins in their fantasy championship game, but the Redskins signal-caller should be viewed as an underrated option and a fine QB No. 2 candidate in two-quarterback leagues against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Monte Kiffin's defense allows the most passing yards per game (297) and sixth-highest passer rating (96.4) in the NFL

After shutting down the Green Bay Packers offense in the first half in Week 15, Matt Flynn, who, to most, is less talented than Cousins, finish 26-of-39 for 299 yards with four touchdowns and only one interception.

While we can't expect 381 yards and three touchdowns again from Cousins, we must buy his performance from a week ago heading into this NFC East showdown.

Sell: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Denver Broncos

2 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 8 carries, 19 yards, 5 catches, 36 yards

Knowshon Moreno has been a fantasy stud in 2013. He's carried the ball 224 times for 939 yards with 10 scores on the ground and 53 receptions for 481 receiving yards with two more scores through the air in a "pass-happy" offense.

However, in Week 15, when many needed another big night from Moreno to get into the championship game, he fell short of his projection in just about every league.

The former first-round pick has now been held under 20 yards rushing in two of his last three games, but getting the 2-12 Houston Texans this week represents a juicy matchup for Moreno.

Houston allows 4.2 yards per carry, and if Peyton Manning and Co. get the Broncos out to a big lead, look for plenty of fourth-quarter rushing attempts.

Also, remember—even if Moreno doesn't show up as a runner, he'll almost assuredly make an impact as a pass-catcher.

He's hauled in 15 of Manning's throws for 139 yards with one touchdown in his last three outings.

Moreno's scared you a bit of late, but you can rely on a rebound effort this Sunday.

Therefore, we're selling the bad fantasy day from a week ago.

Buy: Kendall Wright, WR, Tennessee Titans

3 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 12 catches, 150 yards

Kendall Wright has been a significant fantasy asset in 2013, especially because, in all likelihood, you didn't have to use an early pick on him.

The second-year wideout from Baylor has 85 receptions for 1,007 yards on the season.

Wright saw a whopping 20 targets from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to led to his huge PPR day against the Arizona Cardinals, and expect more of the same in Week 16 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Wright possesses threatening downfield speed and wins with deceptive quickness off the line and in and out of his cuts.

In short, he's proven to be extremely hard to cover.

The Jaguars have surrendered the fifth-highest QB rating (96.9) and the seventh-highest yards-per-attempt average this year.

Wright had seven catches for 78 yards earlier in the season against Jacksonville.

While Fitzpatrick has kept this speedster wide receiver from breaking out down the field, the veteran quarterback looks for Wright often.

Expect another high-volume output on Sunday.

Sell: Jimmy Graham, TE, New Orleans Saints

4 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 2 catches, 25 yards

Jimmy Graham was not very Jimmy Graham-like in Week 15's loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Two grabs for 25 yards.

Really?

Need not worry, it won't happen again on Sunday against the Panthers in Carolina.

Discounting the Week 15 game and the last-second defeat at the hands of the New England Patriots, Graham had either scored a touchdown or caught at least five passes for at least 41 yards in every game this year.

Against the Panthers at home in Week 14, the monstrous tight end made six grabs for 58 yards with two touchdowns.

While New Orleans has proven to be much less explosive and offensively efficient on the road than at home, one has to believe Sean Payton will do whatever needs to be done to prominently feature Graham once again.

Though Luke Kuechly has become one of the best linebackers in the NFL, he does struggle a bit in coverage relative to how he plays against the run and as a blitzer.

Let's go ahead and sell Graham's Week 15 dud.

Buy: Eddie Lacy, RB, Green Bay Packers

5 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 21 carries, 141 yards, 1 TD, 4 catches, 30 yards

Eddie Lacy was a one-man wrecking crew against the Dallas Cowboys a week ago. His 60-yard scamper gave the Green Bay Packers life and helped sparked the outrageous comeback.

Regardless of who's playing quarterback for Mike McCarthy's team, the offensive line has played exceptionally well, paving lanes for Lacy, and the rookie runner has showed off some surprisingly agile open-field moves and power to get as much yardage as possible on every run.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, Lacy's Week 16 opponent, allow 4.2 yards per carry, and outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley was placed on IR earlier this week, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

While we can't expect Lacy to absolutely explode like he did against the Cowboys' soft defense, he will be the central figure of Green Bay's attack and should see more than 20 carries.

In today's NFL, a running back who averages more than 4.0 yards per rush and is bound to see more than 20 carries represents a fine fantasy option.

Sell: Demaryius Thomas, WR, Denver Broncos

6 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 4 catches, 45 yards

The Denver Broncos were held under 300 yards of offense for the first time in 2013, and this led to some shocking fantasy disappointments.

With Wes Welker out with a concussion, Andre Caldwell actually led the team in targets, receptions and receiving yards against the San Diego Chargers.

The four-catch, 45-yard performance was Thomas' worst this season, and he hadn't had fewer than six targets since October 13's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

J.J. Watt and the rest of the Houston Texans' defensive front could give the Broncos some trouble early, but the back end of Wade Phillips' defense is relatively porous.

Even if Denver starts somewhat slow, expect Thomas to see a handful of targets and for the naturally talented wideout to return to form against a hapless team.

We have to sell his weak effort against the Chargers last Thursday.

Buy: Dez Bryant, WR, Dallas Cowboys

7 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 11 catches, 153 yards, 1 TD

Dez Bryant was dominant against the Green Bay Packers, but many will remember his late-game antics. After Tony Romo threw an interception that clinched the loss for Dallas, Bryant bolted to the locker room.

Jason Garrett may want to reprimand Bryant for his overly emotional behavior, but he can't. He has no choice. The Cowboys are in the thick of the NFC East race, and they can't afford to stumble against the 3-11 Redskins in Washington.

Bryant's actually averaged 2.4 more yards per catch on the road than at home this season, and against Washington's abysmal secondary, the polarizing yet undeniably talented receiver could be in for another huge outing.

Only the Atlanta Falcons and Oakland Raiders allow a higher passer rating to opposing quarterbacks than the Redskins.

While it's hard to fathom that Bryant sees the 17 targets he received against the Packers, we're buying his Week 15 masterpiece.

Sell: Greg Jennings, WR, Minnesota Vikings

8 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 11 catches, 163 yards, 1 TD

Based on the frustrating quarterback carousel he's had to endure with the Vikings this season, Greg Jennings has had a pretty admirable year.

He's snagged 59 passes for 733 yards with four touchdowns.

The former Green Bay Packer blew up against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15 and seemed to have new life with Matt Cassel under center instead of Christian Ponder.

Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul-Pioneer Press reported that Cassel will start against the Bengals in Cincinnati this Sunday.

While the Bengals' secondary has been hit with the injury bug in 2013, their defensive front seven is one of the best in the AFC and should put Cassel into many precarious situations in an abundance of collapsing pockets.

The Vikings do seem to move the ball much better and more efficiently with Cassel under center, but we have to sell Jennings' huge outing of a week ago, mainly due to the matchup against a sound defense on the road.

Buy: Zac Stacy, RB, St. Louis Rams

9 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 28 carries, 133 yards, 1 TD, 1 catch, 10 yards

Zac Stacy has been a steady fantasy producer in his rookie season and was likely taken late in your draft, if he was drafted at all.

The St. Louis Rams runner has the build of a young Frank Gore, and he runs like the San Francisco 49er star as well.

No, the New Orleans Saints don't boast a sound run defense, but Stacy has done nothing to indicate he's in for a fantasy flop in Week 16 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home.

While Greg Schiano's club is stingy against the run, Stacy put up 53 yards with four catches for 34 yards and a touchdown against the Panthers in Carolina earlier in the year as well as 134 yards against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8.

The former Vanderbilt star averages 2.1 more yards per carry at home than he does on the road (5.2 to 3.1).

Although the matchup isn't fantastic on paper, Stacy should have, at the very least, a respectable game against the Buccaneers.

Sell: Trent Richardson, RB, Colts

10 of 10

Week 15 Statistics: 19 carries, 64 yards, 4 catches, 38 yards, 1 TD

When a 64-yard output is considered a breakout game, you know it's been a rough sophomore campaign for Trent Richardson

The Indianapolis Colts got him into the end zone on a gadgety shovel pass near the goal line, but for the most part, the former No. 3 overall pick was ineffective against the Houston Texans at home.

Despite all the talk about how tremendous the Kansas City Chiefs defense is, it has allowed 4.5 yards per carry this season.

But with the way the plodding Richardson has proven to run, an effort that yields more than 3.0 yards per carry would be considered a positive day on the ground.

While the running back could be used as a receiver out of the backfield on a few occasions, he's just had way more dud outings than good outings.

We have to sell last week's outlier performance.
