WWE Promotional Machine Continues to Entertain

JoeSportsFanMay 20, 2009

A day after the NBA Western Conference Finals Game Four/Monday Night Raw conundrum became public, the WWE put on a step-by-step clinic in marketing and promotion. For example …

1) Send out a corporate press release with quotes from Vince McMahon, Chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment, ripping the owner of the Nuggets, Stan Kroenke.

2) Maintain the status quo and publicly announce the crew and talent for Monday Night Raw will be in Denver this coming Monday.

3) Come up with a catchy little name for the public spat, “the Debacle in Denver”.

4) Have Vince McMahon appear on the ESPN News airwaves discussing the debacle and in the process, publicly place full responsibility on Stan Kroenke (as if Stan actually works at the Pepsi Center and creates contracts etc.)

4b) During the interview, have McMahon stir the pot and show empathy for the Nuggets fans and players for having such an apathetic owner.

4c) Use the interview to publicly side with Kobe Bryant and the Lakers by posing with his jersey.

5) Announce hours later that both Madison Square Garden and the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles have offered to house Monday Night Raw in Denver’s stead, thus causing more love between Los Angeles and WWE. Do this without stating whether or not you will take either venue up on their offers, keeping the mainstream media guessing as to whether they’ll actually show up in Denver.

The ultimate irony in the interview is the fact that ESPN News anchor Jonathan Coachman worked for WWE for a span of nine years up until last summer. For the full video interview, click here. Hell even Jim Rome commented on it. ###MORE###

1835 – Otto is named the first modern king of Greece.  154 later, he was names first  modern bus driver of “The Simpsons“.

1948 - Cleveland Indians tie American League record of 18 walks, but still beat the Boston Red Sox 13 to four.  Holy shit.

1984 – Patrick Ewing, Jr. is born into the world.  He is the oldest son of retired NBA Hall of Famer, Patrick Ewing,, obviously.  Ewing was chosen as the 43rd overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, but has since been dropped and signed by the New York Knicks’ D-League affiliate, Reno Bighorns.

1991 - #23, Michael Jordan wins the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award.  It was only his second of five total MVP awards.

…you know, the millions of dollars, the women, the fancy cars, the fame, the knowledge that once you have signed a guaranteed contract you can loaf around through the duration and not worry about your paycheck (sorry NFL guys).

But being an athlete also has its detriments.   And if most athletes - particularly basketball players - were to make a list of things that could potentially suck about going pro, right at the top of the list would have to be “playing for the Clippers”.

With that in mind, we say “tough break” to Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin, the presumed number one pick, after yesterday’s draft lottery saw Mike Dunleavy and the Clips score yet another first overall pick whose career they can destroy.

Always fun when a drunk George Brett rips the local media in Kansas City.
