NFL Week 5 Picks: Unbeatens That Will Roll into Week 6

Kenny DeJohnJun 7, 2018

Five teams remain undefeated after four weeks of the NFL season. Just three of those teams will roll easily into Week 6 sitting pretty at 5-0.

The Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots are all 4-0, and the first quarter of the NFL season has seen them dominate the competition more often than not. In Week 5, though, there will be two teams that won't dominate. They'll need to work hard and play tough to move on to 5-0. Heck, they might not even win.

The Chiefs are the biggest surprise of the group. Alex Smith and Andy Reid seem to be doing an outstanding job in changing the culture of Kansas City football, but it'll be interesting to see if they can keep it up. A team with talented players that haven't tasted meaningful games in their careers often has to battle both pressure and expectations when off to this kind of start.

Many expect the Broncos to meet either the Saints or the Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Denver is probably the most explosive offense this league has seen in years, and the Seahawks defense is nearly just as dominant. New Orleans has used both a potent offense and stout defensive line to win games.

New England struggled in Weeks 1 and 2, barely pulling out wins against the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets, but the team hasn't really struggled since. Tom Brady has had trouble meshing with his young receivers, but they've still managed to go 4-0.

Three of these teams will roll through Week 5 with ease. The two teams that won't might surprise you.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks take on the Indianapolis Colts (3-1) on Sunday, and expect the defense to take center stage. Indianapolis is a quality team that will more than likely be playoff bound, but Seattle will have no problems in moving to 5-0.

Andrew Luck will be flushed from the pocket frequently by Seattle's defensive line, and expect the secondary to look to intercept any pass they can get their hands on. Even if Luck doesn't turn the ball over once, the secondary will force many incomplete passes.

Running the ball is a huge part of Indy's offense, but Ahmad Bradshaw and Trent Richardson will have a tough time getting it going in this one. Seattle's team defense is just too good for them to make any sort of impact on the game.

Because of the inconsistency I expect from the Colts offense, there's really no way they can pull this game out. All Russell Wilson has to do is keep the chains moving on offense and set up a couple of touchdowns for his team to win.

Kansas City Chiefs

There's actually a pretty good chance the Chiefs stay undefeated at least until Week 10. The Houston Texans in Week 7 represent a challenge, but the Chiefs have proved that they are a quality football team after starting 4-0.

The Tennessee Titans in Week 5 would have represented a decent challenge if Jake Locker didn't injure his hip in Week 4 against the Jets, so a team led by Ryan Fitzpatrick represents much less of a threat. Fitzpatrick has been turnover-prone over the course of his career, and the Chiefs boast the second-best passing defense in the NFL at 188.8 yards per game.

As long as Jamaal Charles gets the ball and Alex Smith can find Dwayne Bowe down the field, the Chiefs should have absolutely no problem disposing of the Titans. Smith doesn't have to do anything spectacular to win. All he has to do is manage the game like he's done all season.

Don't be surprised if the Chiefs put together another beatdown like they did last week against the New York Giants. Kansas City has the definitive edge in this one.

Denver Broncos

It's is impossible to pick against the Broncos right now. Okay, maybe foolish is a better word than impossible.

Peyton Manning has been absolutely unstoppable, racking up 16 touchdown passes and zero interceptions through four games. Yes, he's on pace for an absurd 64 touchdowns this season. The trio of Wes Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker has worked wonders in Denver, and the emergence of Julius Thomas has simply made it unfair for opposing defenses.

The Broncos face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, but even a capable defense like Dallas' won't be able to hang with Denver. They are averaging nearly 500 yards per game without a running game, and even singling out Manning as the defensive plan won't be enough to stop them.

This game will be another cake walk for Denver. It'll be a few weeks until the Broncos actually play a game in which they'll be challenged. That comes in Week 10 against the Chiefs.
