Jeremy Lin Film 'Linsanity' Shows Story Will Live on After Basketball

Ryan RudnanskySep 27, 2013

The new film about Houston Rockets point guard Jeremy LinLinsanity, traces back to the Chinese-American's childhood, and chronicles how he became a global icon on the basketball court and off it.

Lin became the first Chinese-American to play in the NBA when he broke in with the Golden State Warriors in 2010. The film, released in Manhattan on Friday, shows his path to the NBA, and the stereotypes and racism he had to face along the way.

Lin has become more than just a role model to Asian-Americans. He has become a role model for many young kids looking to overcome long odds. He's become an inspirational figure, going undrafted in 2010, only to start for the New York Knicks during the 2011-12 season. His legend grew in New York, as he turned around a team that started out 8-15 and pushed it to the playoffs.

Linsanity shows how Lin's story will live on after basketball. He has transcended boundaries, broken stereotypes and inspired millions, all because he never let his doubters sway him.

Lin's story grew as he succeeded with the Knicks and paired with All-Star James Harden in Houston, but, at this point, he doesn't have to become a great player on the hardwood for his story to live on. This has become about more than an Asian-American from Harvard succeeding on the basketball court—it has become proof that anything is possible.

Linsanity director Evan Jackson Leong said of the film, via Lewis Beale of Newsday:

"

Asian-Americans don't really have role models of that kind that we can look up to. Jeremy did it in the biggest way possible. It's not just a story about basketball, it transcends sports and culture; you can follow your dreams and actually achieve. For Asian-Americans, that's a huge thing.

"

The new film about Lin highlights the incredible journey the 25-year-old has taken, giving an inside look on his thoughts and beliefs. You don't have to be a basketball fan, or a Chinese-American aspiring to play professional basketball, to get something out of this film. It is simply a glimpse of what true greatness looks like.

If there is one thing we all can learn from Jeremy Lin, it's to never give up on your dreams. They are more attainable than you could ever imagine.
