Miami Heat Officially Sign Michael Beasley

Richard LangfordJun 8, 2018

Michael Beasley is returning to the franchise that made him the second-overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft. The two-time defending champion Miami Heat made the signing official via Twitter:

Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported that "Beasley has to make the roster to earn his one-year, minimum contract deal of $1 million."

The 24-year-old performed well below expectations in his first season with the Phoenix Suns, turning inย career-lows of 10.1 points per game and 40.5 percent shooting. On Aug. 6, the troubled forward wasย arrested onย suspicion of marijuana possession, which ultimately led to his release from the team on Sept. 3.ย

A shoot-first player with excessive off-court issues isn't the most attractive free-agent option, but it's easy to see why Miami made this move.ย

Keeping LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on salary forces the Heat to hunt for bargains in the offseason, and with a meager $1 million invested, the team can cut Beasley with little financial implication.ย

The former Kansas State star also won't be counted on to do much other than what he is best-suited for: providing instant offense.ย In five seasons between Miami, Minnesota and Phoenix, Beasley has averaged 14.1 points per game and 19.2 points per 36 minutes.ย

Though the once-promising prospect may have lost his way, a second stop in South Beach could be his ticket to redemption.ย
