Vin Scully Will Return for 65th Year Calling Dodgers Games in 2014

Doug MeadJun 4, 2018

When he started calling games for the Brooklyn Dodgers as a freckle-faced 22-year-old back in 1950, Vin Scully couldn't possibly have imagined becoming arguably the greatest broadcaster the sport has ever known.

It's also unlikely he ever envisioned holding the same job 65 years later.ย But that's exactly what Scully will be doing for the Dodgers in 2014.ย

The team officially announced on Friday that Scullyย will return for a record 65th season in 2014:

The 85-year-old Scully, who called the only perfect game in postseason history back in 1956 alongside fellow legendary play-by-play man Mel Allen, only calls home games and travels no farther east thanย Arizona for away games.ย

Legendary former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda likewise turned to his Twitter account to celebrate the news:

Dodgers fans have already weighed in on how they feel about the iconic broadcaster returning for yet another season:

Scully was a recipient of the Ford Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 and is the longest-tenured broadcaster of any team in the history of professional sports.ย

He has broadcast numerous World Series along with three perfect gamesโ€”Larsen in 1956, Sandy Koufax in 1965 and Tom Browning in 1988.

Scully never developed a catchphrase, nor has he ever had a unique way to call home runs. But he has been a part of so many memorable moments in baseball with calls that will forever be cherished, like Game 1 of the 1988 World Series:ย

Dodgers fans are no doubt welcoming the fact that Vin Scully will once again be saying, "It's Time for Dodger baseball!"
