NBA Rumors: Latest Buzz Surrounding Mo Williams, Beno Udrih and More

Patrick ClarkeJun 5, 2018

With Greg Oden heading to Miami to join the two-time defending NBA champion Heat, according to Marc Stein and Jeff Goodman of ESPN, the free-agency focus has shifted to a handful of veteran point guards who many feel can still contribute to contending teams in 2013-14.

Mo Williams, Beno Udrih and Sebastian Telfair appear to be drawing interest from playoff-caliber franchises this August, but for now we can only speculate as to where they'll wind up next season.

Here we'll take a closer look at the latest free-agent buzz surrounding some of the biggest names still on the market this summer.

Memphis Grizzlies Eyeing Mo Williams?

Veteran point guard Mo Williams still has plenty to offer a contending team next season, especially a squad on the cusp like the Memphis Grizzlies.

According to ESPN NBA insider Marc Stein via Twitter, as of this past weekend, the Grizzlies were in discussions with both Williams and free agent Beno Udrih:

Not much has changed over the past few days, and according to The Commercial Appeal's Ronald Tillery (subscription required). The reason why is that both players "appear to be holding out for more than a one-year, veteran’s minimum of roughly $1.4 million."

Williams is only 30 years old and is coming off a year in which he averaged 12.9 points and 6.2 assists per game in 46 regular-season starts for the Utah Jazz.

Injuries have limited the sharpshooting floor general in recent seasons, but when healthy, Williams can lead an offense and score 10-15 points per night off the bench.

Knicks Making Beno Udrih a Priority?

While Beno Udrih has been a part of recent discussions with the Memphis Grizzlies, the New York Knicks have made the underrated point guard their top priority this August, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Ian Begley: "New York's top free-agent priority remains Beno Udrih, according to sources familiar with the team's thinking."

Begley adds that the Knicks will bring in free-agent point guard Bobby Brown to work out as well, seemingly as a backup plan in case Udrih turns them down. Brown hasn't played in the NBA since the 2009-10 season but has starred overseas in the EuroLeague.

Meanwhile, Udrih, who turned 31 this summer, averaged 10.2 points and 6.1 assists per game with the Orlando Magic down the stretch last season after being traded by the Milwaukee Bucks.

There's no doubt that Udrih would add some much-needed depth to New York's backcourt. Currently, the only two point guards on New York's roster are Raymond Felton and 36-year-old Pablo Prigioni.

Defending Champs and Sebastian Telfair

Veteran free-agent point guards appear to be a hot commodity this August. Not only are players like Mo Williams and Beno Udrih drawing serious interest, but so is backup journeyman Sebastian Telfair, according to HOOPSWORLD's Alex Kennedy via Twitter:

Miami hasn't had any trouble finding success with Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole sharing point-guard duties in South Beach, but Telfair would provide the Heat with a third option off the bench.

The 28-year-old averaged 4.3 points and three assists per game in 13 appearances with the Toronto Raptors toward the end of last season after being traded by the Phoenix Suns.

Something for Miami to consider: Williams shot a career-best 38 percent from beyond the arc during his time with Phoenix last season before the trade to Toronto.

If he can step off the bench, knock down shots and help Miami space the floor, he has the potential to be an underrated signing this summer.
