Bet-at-Home Cup Kitzbuhel 2013: Daily Scores, Results and Schedule

Benjamin KleinJun 6, 2018

Play is underway from Kitzbuhel, Austria, and even though the Bet-at-Home Cup isn’t one of the major tournaments of the year, it’s sure to be highly competitive.

Plenty of notable players entered this year’s tournament, including No. 1 Philipp Kohlschreiber and No. 2 Juan Monaco, among others.

Robin Haase may not be one of the top seeds in this year’s event, but he’s the player that everyone should be keeping an eye on. Even though the Dutchman recently fell in the final match at the Swiss Open, Haase has won the Bet-at-Home Cup in each of the last two years.

There are 27 entrants who will be trying to prevent Haase from winning his third consecutive title in this tournament. With the 2013 U.S. Open now less than a month away, everyone is also hoping to head to New York with some extra hardware in their luggage.

So, will it be Haase or someone else winning the crown in Austria?

Check back here frequently for the updated draw and each day’s results and recap.

RECAP

While none of the top four seeds were in action on Monday, there were still a few impressive performances. In fact, only one of the matches was decided in three sets. Horacio Zeballos narrowly won the first set and then was taken to school in the second by Martin Fischer. Zeballos bounced back in the third and managed to take the match.

No. 7 Albert Montanes was the highest seed taking the clay on the first day of the tournament and had a strong showing against Adrian Ungur. He made quick work of the 28-year-old Romanian, losing only six games throughout the match.

No. 8 Marcel Granollers was the only other seeded player battling on Monday, and he had a tougher time advancing to the second round than Montanes. Mate Pavic gave him a run for his money in the first set, but Granollers pulled away in the tiebreak. He wasn’t going let Pavic force a third set, as the No. 8 seed won the second set 6-2.

Daniel Gimeno-Traver arguably played the best of anyone in Austria on Monday. He only dropped four games in two sets against Antonio Veic. He isn’t one of the bigger names in this year’s tournament, but could be an under-the-radar contender.

Dominic Thiem and Leonardo Mayer each advanced to the second round of the tournament with straight-set victories as well. More players will soon be joining them as the first round of the Bet-at-Home Cup continues on Tuesday. No. 1 Philipp Kohlschreiber will be in action on the second day, as he'll square off against Mayer.

RECAP

It was a thrilling day from Austria, as top-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber was bounced from the tournament courtesy of Leonardo Mayer. Mayer took down Kohlschreiber in straight sets, as the No. 1 player couldn’t force a third. He wasn’t the only seeded player to fall on Tuesday, though.

Carlos Berlocq, the No. 5 seed, lost to Daniel Brands in three sets. The matchup between Thomaz Bellucci and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez was the only other match to require an additional set. Garcia-Lopez advanced to the second round despite dropping the opening set.

No. 8 Marcel Granollers survived his second-round test against Horacio Zeballos, who was forced to retire during the second set. Granollers won the first set without dropping a game and was up 2-0 when Zeballos retired. He’ll now face Mayer, the biggest winner from Tuesday, in the third round.

Jan Hajek and Victor Hanescu each advanced to the second round of the bracket with 6-2, 6-1 victories. Andreas Haider-Maurer also lived to see another day, as he defeated Dennis Novak 6-4, 6-4. The two-time defending champion, Robin Haase, will be joining those three in the next round as well, as he was victorious on Tuesday.

The No. 1 seed has already been bounced from the tournament and there’s a chance that all four top seeds will be eliminated soon. Juan Monaco, Fernando Verdasco and Jurgen Melzer, the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, are all in action on Wednesday. They’ll look to avoid an early exit from Austria.

RECAP

The match of the day undoubtedly came from Albert Montanes and Victor Hanescu, as the favored player survived two tiebreakers to ultimately win.

Montanes was all over the map on his serve, hitting 11 aces but getting just 53 percent of his first serves in play. When the first serve went in Montanes dominated, however, winning 76 percent of his first-serve points.

Chalk mostly held on the day, as No. 2 Juan Monaco and No. 3 Fernando Verdasco handled their business in straight sets. However, there was yet another upset, as Dominic Thiem knocked out No. 4 Jurgen Melzer.

Thiem won despite a pretty poor first, which he kept in play just 43 percent of the time. Still, when he didn't have to rely on his second serve he dominated, winning 21 of 26 first-serve points.

In the other two matches, Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Robin Haase each registered fairly comfortable, straight-set wins.

With four of the top eight players in this tournament in action on Thursday, it promises to be another fund day of tennis in Austria.

RECAP

On a day when the favorites mostly skated through, Robin Haase had to go and shake things up, knocking No. 3 Fernando Verdasco out of the tournament in three sets.

Haase used a strong serve (seven aces) and owned Verdasco's second serve, winning 51 percent of those points. He'll need to have another upset up his sleeve, however, as he next faces Marcel Granollers.

The No. 8 player cruised to an easy victory over Leonardo Mayer, losing just four games in the process, winning 83 percent of his first serve points.

No. 7 Albert Montanes didn't have things quite so easy, but he still dispatched of Dominic Thiem in straight sets. Like Granollers, he was pretty unstoppable when he kept his first serve in, winning 81 of those points.

The top-ranked player remaining, Juan Monaco, struggled a bit more than his ranked counterparts, but he still managed to defeat Daniel Gimeno-Traver in three sets. He'll surely be tested against Montanes in the more intriguing of the two semifinals.

RECAP

After days of upsets and surprising results, the bet-at-home Kitzbuhel semifinals went as expected with No. 8 Marcel Granollers outlasting Robin Haase in three sets, and No. 2 Juan Monaco getting past Albert Montanes in a hard-fought, two-set affair.

Granollers jumped out to an early lead against Haase, but the resilient Dutchman forced a third set just one week after finishing as the runner-up in the Swiss Open. Granollers proved to be too much for the two-time bet-at-home Kitzbuhel champion, though, as he won the third set to advance to the final.

Monaco didn't have to fight quite as hard as Granollers did, but he very nearly let his match get away. After taking the first set against Montanes and storming out to a big lead in the second, Montanes was able to even the score at 5-5. Monaco showed nerves of steel, though, as he broke Montanes and served out the match.

The veteran Argentinian won this tournament way back in 2007, and there is little doubt that he is favored to do so again this year. Monaco will have his hands full against Granollers, though, as the Spaniard has beaten him twice in three career meetings.

All three of those matches took place on clay like their match on Saturday will, but they haven't faced each other since 2011. These two players are as evenly-matched as can be, so there is no doubt that the final will be a competitive and entertaining affair.

RECAP

In what turned out to be a major surprise, No. 8 Marcel Granollers won the bet-at-home Cup crown in Kitzbuhel, Austria on Saturday after a miraculous comeback against No. 2 Juan Monaco.

The official Twitter account for the ATP World Tour announced Granollers as the champion:

"

.@M_Granollers wins 4th @ATPWorldTour title with 06 76(3) 64 win over @picomonaco in #Kitzbuhel. #atp #tennis

— ATP World Tour (@ATPWorldTour) August 3, 2013"

Granollers played horribly in the opening set, as Monaco overpowered and outplayed the Spaniard. Monaco didn’t drop a game in the first set and it appeared that he was going to cruise to a two-set victory. But Granollers wasn’t going to just give up despite getting shut out early.

Monaco and Granollers went back and forth in the second set, and a tiebreak was necessary to determine whether the match would be won or if a third set would be required. Granollers really stepped up in the tiebreak, knowing that his back was against the wall from the start.

Granollers won the tiebreak to force a decisive third set. He kept battling and battling until he gained a lead on the Argentinian. Granollers kept his foot on the gas and completed an incredible comeback with a 6-4 third-set win to claim his fourth ATP title.
