Unsurprisingly, this was a big moment for the long-standing tournament and the local fans who support it. Fans throughout the stadium could barely contain themselves toward the end of the three-hour-long match.

Here is a look at the final point won by Murray and the reaction from the fans in attendance:

Of course, it was not just the crowd in the stadium that was excited. Fans around the country gathered together to watch this momentous occasion. Wimbledon's Instagram account compiled video of the crowds.

There are few fans of the sport anywhere who could not appreciate the great play on the court and the moment surrounding Murray's victory.

This battle between the top two players in the sport also brought out plenty of celebrities on hand to watch the action, as noted by Bleacher Report:

In the match itself, there were plenty of twists and turns to make this one of the closer straight-set wins you will see in a long time.

Murray was impressive right away with two breaks in the first set. Combining this with the 16-of-19 points he won on the first serve, Murray was playing as well as possible to take the opening set 6-4.

Wimbledon's Twitter account captured the mood of Centre Court at the time:

Djokovic performed much better at the start of the second set and jumped up to a 4-1 lead. However, Murray turned it around from there and went on to win six of the next seven games to win the second set 7-5.

The comeback in the set caught the attention of many, including ESPN's Kevin Negandhi:

At that point, Murray had to already feel pretty good about his chances thanks to these two statistics provided by ESPN Stats & Info:

History repeated itself as Murray was able to hold on for the straight-set victory. Djokovic once again built up an advantage in the third set by winning four of the first six games. However, the Scottish player continued to show his resolve.

The No. 2 seed continued his comeback effort, and by the end of the final game the crowd could barely contain itself, as noted by Wimbledon on Twitter:

Of course, it was not an easy final game for Murray, who received a tough charge late by Djokovic, according to Wimbledon:

However, Murray finally closed out his opponent to win the Wimbledon title for the first time in his decorated career.

This is a great moment for the country that has hosted this prestigious tournament for a long time without seeing one of its own win it. It is also big for Murray, who finally relieves himself of the pressure of winning at the All England Club after reaching the finals last year.

It was a fantastic performance by one of the best in the game, and the match will not soon be forgotten.
