Wimbledon 2013 Results: Latest Updates From All England Club

Benjamin KleinJul 1, 2013

All England Club has played host to one of the most exciting three rounds of Wimbledon play in recent memory, and the matches are only going to get better as time goes on.

The fourth round is set to begin on Monday are there are bound to be some interesting results. We’ve already seen underdogs upset plenty of contenders, and a few of the top players in the world have been forced to withdraw with injury. There’s a strong chance that there are more upsets to come as well.

There are still several big names alive in the tournament, who will attempt to avoid losing before the quarterfinals get underway. Both No. 1 seeds are still in the hunt and are certainly players to watch going forward. While Serena Williams might not be tested for a while, Novak Djokovic may see his run come to an end soon, as featured below.

Here are three matches to keep an eye on as fourth-round play commences on Monday from All England Club, with previous results and analysis for each of the featured players taking the court.

Petra Kvitova vs. Carla Suarez Navarro

Nearly six months ago to the day, Petra Kvitova and Carla Suarez Navarro took the court at the Australian Open. Kvitova made quick work of her opponent, winning in straight sets. It was the fourth time Kvitova defeated Suarez Navarro in her career, but she isn’t perfect against her. Kvitova lost in the China Open in 2012.

Kvitova is seeking her second career Wimbledon title this year and has had a tough time getting to the fourth round. It took her three sets to win in the first round and another three in the third round. She might’ve needed three in the second, but we’ll never know since she walked over Yaroslava Shvedova.

Suarez Navarro has had a much smoother route to the fourth round. She won in straight sets in the first round against Lourdes Dominguez Lino as well as in the third round against Eugenie Bouchard. She found herself in a major hole in the second round when she fell in the first set to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. She bounced back nicely to win the next two sets.

While Suarez Navarro is the lower seed, it wouldn’t be surprising to see her advance to the quarterfinals. She’s never made it past the third round at Wimbledon and she’s already done that. Expect Suarez Navarro to upset Kvitova to live to see another day.

Prediction: Suarez Navarro over Kvitova

Novak Djokovic vs. Tommy Haas

The No. 1 seed on the men’s side of the tournament at Wimbledon hasn’t won the title since Roger Federer did it in 2007. Tommy Haas is going to try to keep that streak alive when he takes the court against the top player in the world, Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic has been the best player at All England Club thus far, winning each of his three matches in straight sets. He continues to improve, committing fewer unforced errors as the tournament has progressed. He only committed three in the third round against Jeremy Chardy.

This ESPN Stats & Info tweet also shows Djokovic’s dominance:

Haas has only made it past the fourth round one in his career at Wimbledon, coming in 2009 when he fell in the semifinals. This year, he has a prime opportunity to advance, but will need to be a flawless match against Djokovic. He cruised through his first two matches and won in the third round despite a second-set hiccup.

The two have already faced off three times in 2013. Djokovic won two of the matches, most notably in the quarterfinals at the French Open. Haas shocked Djokovic in the fourth round at the Sony Ericsson Open back in March. Haas has a slim chance at doing it again, but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Prediction: Djokovic over Haas

Roberta Vinci vs. Li Na

Roberta Vinci enters the fourth round against Li Na as a slight underdog, but she’s more than capable of advancing to the quarterfinals. Vinci has only dropped one set throughout her first three matches at All England Club and looked flawless against No. 18 Dominika Cibulkova in the third round.

Aside from a straight sets victory in the first round at Wimbledon, Li has not looked sharp. After taking the first set in the second round against Simona Halep, Halep demolished Li in the second, 6-1. She came out victorious in the third set, though. Li nearly fell against in the third round, but somehow managed to pull away again.

Ben Rothenberg of The New York Times thought that it was a big win for Li:

The two have faced off before, but never in a major tournament like Wimbledon. Li defeated Vinci in at Gold Coast in 2006 and then won again in 2011 at Madrid. With Li looking vulnerable in her previous two matches, it’ll be interesting to see how she plays early against Vinci. Vinci could come away with a massive victory here.

Prediction: Vinci over Li
